My buddy Rick and I did that with 8-track players and mechanical linkages to move the playback heads into contact with the tape back in 1978. It was touch sensitive to the extent that volume was controlled by how far down you pressed the keys. We filched the idea from a guy in California, as I recall.

Very Clever!
Actually though this instrument has a lot more in common with Rick Wakeman's ill-fated Birotron than the classic Mellotron. Neat though
