Just wondering whether anybody can explain whats going on here? I'm not a newcomer to physics and audio theory but am a little puzzled.

I have a pair of ipod earbuds that are on the way out. The right side has lowered in volume and the centre stage image has shifted to the left (as would be expected).

I was listening to a tune yesterday that has a repeating bassline that was panned hard left than right (as if answering each other). I was only able to hear the left part, however higher pitched sounds panned right were OK. I replayed it a few times to check and it happened each time.

So why would only low frequency sounds be cut from one side of the headphones? Or does it have something to do with how the bass was panned? What are your thoughts?

phase cancelation?

The particular bass line was a phrase panned to the left channel then repeated for the right channel so there shouldn't be any phase cancellation issues.
