Dear Guitar Synth Registered User

It is with great sadness that we write to tell you of the death of Ian Mold, the originator and sole developer of Guitar Synth sold via Lateral Solution Limited. Ian received much support from individual users for Guitar Synth who enjoyed using the product and who offered many suggestions for future developments. Ian had developed an ASIO version in recent months to try and resolve the latency problems many users experienced but was not able to take forward the beta testing of that version as he'd planned as a result of the progression of his illness with cancer.

As his family, we are proud of what Ian achieved with Guitar Synth and it would be fitting to think that Guitar Synth could become a form of "memorial" to him and also for the Guitar Synth community to continue to benefit from the development of Guitar Synth. As Ian himself wrote in a note that is now on the Lateral Solution website:

"I want to say thank you for your encouragement and support while developing Guitar Synth over the last few years. I know that Guitar Synth is not the last word on the subject of software guitar synths but as the first polyphonic system, I hope I have shown what's possible and others can improve on the concept."

We have no technical knowledge to continue this development and so the purpose of this email is to invite any interest from registered users such as yourself who might want to play a role in that future development - through software development or as a contributor to a development group or via some other means. If you are interested, please do reply to this email so that we can circulate details of your interest to other users who are of a similar view. You can then perhaps work out together how you can best collaborate for the benefit of Guitar Synth. A possible starting point for anyone interested in being involved is the beta testing of the ASIO version Ian had developed.

Whilst we are aware of the business potential of Guitar Synth, our priority is to ensure that Ian's original idea continues. As I'm sure you will appreciate, it would have to be clearly understood by anybody involved in the future development of Guitar Synth that we would not be able to offer any technical assistance nor accept any liability for its future use and that we would insist that any development would acknowledge Ian as the originator.

We look forward to hearing from any of you with your thoughts on how best to take forward the development of Guitar Synth.

with best wishes

The Mold family

is there a vst version of something like this?

That sucks, hard. I think the best thing would be to have the Guitar Synth source opened up so that his work could be spread around to other projects.

That post is very sad.

One of my wife's best friend's just found out she has cancer - it is very scary and very horrible.

I had not heard of Guitar Synth before.

I hope that whoever continues the project renames the synth to include Ian's name.

First Bob Moog, and now this. It sucks to lose anyone from the music community, or anyone at all really. But at least this man has something to be remembered by. That's something we all wish for before death comes and just snatches us away.

Not everybody....

Give it time..cancer will be beat....

I am living proof...20 years of living proof
that cancer can be beat...still it was terrible news.

I hate cancer! I hope they find a cure...seriously.

System20 I am so happy to hear that you survived this evil sickness. And I too hope that a cure will be found soon...but I am not holding my breath.

I'm getting really sick of people dying.

STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT.

That's my thought about how to make it most practical to support the app, if it was a VST then no need to mess with audio support and it will integrate with most peoples hosts.

(then again it would be awesome integrated as a special CV source module in VAZ Modular with 6 CV/level outputs... but that is in my specific interest ;))

If the family are happy to open source that would be a great idea so long as a community pick it up.

Sorry, I posted a similar thread to this in Everything Else without knowing this thread was already on the go.

Although it repeats some of what's already been said, I'll re-post my earlier comments here (with a couple of amendments):

-------------------------------------------------

The announcement of ian's death, plus some details about Guitar Synth and two demo version downloads, can be found here:

http://www.lateralsol.com/

His loss means that there is no longer a developer for Guitar Synth, as he was pretty much a one-man band. One of the improvements he was working on was a version that used ASIO drivers (he'd already come a long way in squeezing performance and lower latency out of other drivers), and there's a distinct possibility that a beta version with this feature may appear for testing in due course.

His family are inviting registered users to collaborate in taking Guitar Synth forward. Unfortunately, I have no programming skills to offer such a project, and I assume that will be the case for quite a few of the registered users, though I've offered to be a beta tester.

And here's the crux: I post this here since I know many developers visit this site, and who knows, someone may be interested in offering their expertise in some capacity. Although the family have only contacted registered users so far, I doubt that any realistic offer of help would be turned away, and the Lateral Solutions Website gives an e-mail link for anyone who wishes to offer help.

RIP, Ian. Deepest sympathy to his family.
-------------------------------------------------

I expect there are other developers here who are similarly very small in scale and maybe sole developers of their products. Nobody wants to plan for the worst, but probably the best tribute to those who work in this field, for profit or otherwise, would be to figure out how to contine their efforts - especially as Ian had indicated that this was what he wanted to happen.

Sorry to be late here. I wrote to Ian a while back about getting Asio in the guitar synth (cutting down the latency) and he told me about his illness holding back any development.
This is terrible, so sad to hear he didn't beat it. I know it's tough living like that, I have serious disease myself.
If anyone in connection with Ian reads this- my condolences.
