I don't have a bass guitar, and for music genre I'm in it seems very difficult to find a good electronic bass sound... Well, electro basses are really good for dance or so music, but for metal/rock I feel they are not too good... Soo... I was wondering if it's possible to shift pitch of my guitar down and get a "bass" like sound... i tried this trick in SoundForge, seems worked good, but I need a VST plugin which let me do so live. Some Pitch Shifter, you say, but maybe there are any special fx for this purpose? Freeware, if possible :P :P

I've gotten 'usable' results just with Tracktion's built-in pitch-shifter, which is notoriously low-quality. So if you can find any pitch-shifter at all, it should do the trick. ;)

OR, another way to do it is: pitch-shift in realtime so that you can "hear" it using something even shoddy-sounding, and then take the resultant .wav and pitch-shift it with Soundforge's (likely) better algorithm.

Don't know of any freeware ones, though, since the Tracktion pitch-shift is native to the host.

Personally, I find it hard to tell samples from the real thing with bass guitar parts, so long as they're not jazz-funk or anything. I do, however, have trouble creating a natural sounding BG line on a keyboard, so I just bought a crap bass for next to nothing. It's an option anyway.

Post

Hehe, I have a crap bass, but it's impossible to play... Absolutely. I gotta buy some tools first to make it playable...

I wanted a VST one to be used in real-time record and composing in Fruity Loops... I see there are many freeware pitch shifters or kvr, gonna check them right now. I just thought maybe there are things made specially for this... But seems no. Damnit. Good idea to a developer ;-)

I used to use (and still do, actually) pretty unimpressive soundfonts for basslines in rock music. I'd get by OK by just making sure the bass samples had a good low end and not worry about the high end too much, just roll it off - cos it's the higher frequencies that'll give it away, really. And nowadays you could put some nice, free tube sat/compressors on them. Not sure what sampler you use, I could make some recommendation, perhaps.

Oh and I should mention I'm not a fan of the pitch-the-guitar down thing, it never really comes off right. You (generally) don't want your low end gurgling full of artefacts, and it's usually to mid-rangey, I find.

Post

I gonna process it with guitar RIG, so probably combo emulation will eat all the crap frequencies, and also distorting the bass sound should (i believe so) hide these pitch shifting "pieces"...

Also samples IMO never will give me a "live" sound... That's why I not use them, and of course, there are a lot of synth basses which may sound even more nice than any bass guitar alone, but not for this music. Bass should sing, fill musical holes... Maybe even a crap real bass would be better even a good synth/sample.

I think sometimes it is. Although I've just gone down the midi guitar route, so I'm not using it so much.

FFS! Obtain and learn to play a bass guitar.

What's FFS, is it a plugin or a joke?.. or is it a guitar ;-)

believe it or not I have found Real Basses by EastWest to be very nice. But you gotta have a multi velocity sampler...however it has nice sounds if you want a natural bass guitar sound and only 40 bux..;)

I can't make a natural note slide with samples, can't get natural click, can't even make sound sound different from note to note with samples... I used FLStudio boo bass synth, processed it with Amplitude, it gives very nice and really agressive sound, and I even used it for some song... Electronic song. Because it sounds nice, but dead... It's the general problem with samples. They all have the same spectrum, always during playing. It's boring.

FFF!!! UUUU!!!!! KKKK!!!! PShift from ConcreteFX - damaged archive, mda Detune - crappy buggy sht which seems not allows to make pitch shift to more than 1 semitone, some other developer I didn't remeber, stays first in kvr list - damnit, can't find a link on the site! Seems it easier to get my crap bass alive than to find a pitch shifter...
