Ryuichi Sakamoto - Amazing composer than can do anything from classical, operas, industrial, electronic, jazz, avant-garde, ambient, ethnic, to just about any style/time period.

19th Century French Impressionism (Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy..etc)

Lisa Ekdahl - Her English Jazz albums are excellent--very expressive and lovely voice.

I second Ryuichi Sakamoto. I haven't heard much from this guy, but what I have heard, I've loved.

Philip Glass would also be someone good to look into. If you're not familiar with Glass, check out Glassworks. If you want something more, listen to 1,000 Airplanes on the Roof, Einstein on the Beach, Koyaanisqatsi and/or The Truman Show soundtrack. Too many works by Glass to mention.

I also want to mention Naoshi Mizuta who scored Final Fantasy XI. He has this really interesting progressive fusion style that's influenced by minimalism. He writes music much differently than other game and film music composers. It's incredible what he can do with some software reverb and a Roland SC88.

Medwyn Goodall is also a really neat new age composer.

Alright, alright - David Cunningham (from The Flying Lizards. See also PIANO label). His use of effects, style fusing, production I find awe inspiring.
The Fourth Wall, although shoody by even 80's production standards holds that 'something' for me. Really packed with alot of potential, and no doubt Virgin wasn't going to give Cunningham a huge budget after seeing the lack of returns Public Image Ltd. pulled in with their 'Flowers Of Romance' album. (which I think is one of THE top 5 albums of the 20th Century!)

Cunningham is MUCH more than just 'Money'.

Not more than 3 titles(artists/albums/songs), please. I know it's difficult, tho, but do try. I don't have all that time, you know.

You do realize that a question that general could reasonably get 3*(number of people on KvR) titles to check out? I mean, could you narrow things down at all?

To pick three at random from my 'don't leave this behind if getting stuck on a desert island' list:
Beethoven (duh) - esp the 7th symphony and the 4th piano concerto, The Velvet Underground (esp the Velvet Underground and Nico) and Mr Fingers - Can U Feel It.
But that's three out of quite a lot.

Steven West: Yes, I was quite serious. And I was a bit surprised to see some emotional reactions. It's just an internet forum. And it's not like I'm asking if I can marry your daughter or something...
I just see it as a discussion thread.

I am lazy, but I'd rather see some opinions than pick up random cds in a shop. Especially when I see that I already agree on some stuff, like Ravel and such.

I'll check out the Flying Lizards.


DWb: I know it's not that simple. To narrow down I'd say post music that is creative, innovative, ... that is also inspirational for a musician... That brings new points of view on music/life...
