Slade & T.Rex were the ones in the UK that divided the kids! Sweet were really a heavy rock band. They just happened to fit in with what Chinn/Chapman wanted to do when they first got hold of them I think - Little Willy etc were pure pop - good pop music and fun - when the glam thing started with Marc Bolan lots of bands jumped on it. Slade for instance were a skinhead band when they first started and then Dave Hill went for the glam bit too. Back then week in week out you saw bands trying to out do each other on Top Of The Pops getting more and more over the top. It was a fun time too. Sweet in Steve Priest (bass player) had another of those dockers in slap types but he was tongue in cheek and looked damn funny!

Sweet live were a different band - if anyone can get hold of any live recordings they kid some ass as a rock band! They showed their true "metal" no pun intended but they were a metal band

As for lumping Van Halen in with the Bay City Rollers etc - wrong era and wrong music form LOL!!

Sweet are very underrated. Set Me Free, for example, is a great tune. That being said, Ballroom Blitz is completely overrated. Much like T. Rex - love a lot of it but Bang A Gong is a terrible song.

Sweet eh..? Sorry but never liked them much. Especially when they released "Blockbuster"... Hated them for that..!

Sounded like they ripped off my mate Dave's "Gene Genie"...

He never got over that you know...

This is a very funny comment since both Blockbuster and Jean Genie ripped off the main riff of Tobacco Road as recorded by The Nashville Teens.

Yes I am a Sweet fan and have been for over 30 years. Andy Scott's guitar sound was the prototype for a lot of the metal bands in the 80s and 90s - including Motley Crue (listen to Hellraiser). My personal favourite is No You Don't from the Sweet FA album.

BTW, the original Fox on the Run rocks..raw and unadulterated.

I wasn't really a fan, I loved more 'hard' rock at that time (Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath,...) but i loved Ballroom Blitz

Their second album "Sweet Fanny Adams" is a GREAT album.
And after that "Desolation Boulevard" allso super.
They really were good musicians allso.
Mick Tucker was one of the best rock drummers at the time.......go and listen to him

mum had slade alive and i got some sweet album for chrissie. i was also given what my friend claimed as the first kiss album in australia, they bought it from the UK before kiss were known here.and then i also bought the first copy of never mind the bollocks (according to the shop staff)in my home town, ..all this to make up for the first concert i ever attended -david cassidy

i was a mere tadpole in those days, but alot of those groups had huge playground appeal - stomp and chant. these days, the ony groups from that era i only really listen to are sparks and roxy music. another great contribution to the glam genre, albeit on the fringe, was mike batt's womble output.

A fabulous album, for anybody who thinks Slade were just a Glam Rock band, they should check this out. Their version of John Sebastians > Darling Be Home Soon, is worth the price on it's own. Pity the cd is currently out of print

i've actually still got mums old vinyl copy.. a bit worse for wear ,but still listenable.. a great live vibe for sure.. i was listening to it for the first time in years just a couple of weeks ago.. bought a smile to my face..!!
