I just picked up a Slingerland Yellow Jacket pedal, my old one's gone weak,
I like a really stiff resistance, this one has some flip off caps above the gears for oil er something, would grease be better?
also it came with a wooden beater, never tried one before, but wow, feels like my leg just got twice as strong, I'm finding the tension has to go way down( feel like I'm gunna put it right through the skin)
anyone with experiences on wooden beaters as opposed to felt ones,
wonder whether I should keep the tension hot and just try to play softer?
at lower tension its harder for me to get double kicks,
tried backing off the bass skin but the sound changed too much,
any experiences would be appreciated,
thanx

wrt to oil/grease.. grease is probably better, since oil can move around a fair bit in transit. tbh, using something like KYJelly can do the trick if you have some around...
I've used felt and wooden. My current beater is a dw one, with a felt side and wood-effect-fibreglass the other. I prefer the sound of the felt side, but it has the strength of wood.
If you havene't already, maybe put a cross of gaffer tape across whether the beater strike is to help protect the head. Depending on whether the head of you beater is rounded or squared will affect this more. A rounded head will have a smaller point of contact, and this the energy will be more focussed and likely to cause more damage to the kick skin. I've never managed to actually go through a kick skin, but I've made some impressive dents..
wrt to playing style.. largely I would say experiment. You're the only one with your legs
For myself, I have the tension up much more than other players I've met, and can get more even double and triple kicks - the downside is that if I stop playing for a while, when I start again I get pains down my shins until I have strengthened the muscle again..
sorry.. rambling now!
Basically experiment and enjoy. It could give you a whole new sound/style, or it might improve on what you already have. Just try and see

hey duncan, thanks alot for the info,
okay I threw some ky in there, (yes always have some around
)
after playing for awhile it actually loosened up, which is good, so I tightened it back up to full tension, where I like it,
I'm gunna keep this round wooden beater on for a time, it has a nice snap sound to it,
I put a small strip of duck-tape on the hit point like you said,
I know what ya mean about shin splints, get'em here to, I use a kick practice pad when I'm not playin much, actually thinking of putting a peizo mic on it, see if I can get a midi signal from it,
anyway thanx again man, I'm finding this wooden thing really fast, but different to control, gunna take some time to get used to it..
