Big Problem with Rhino and ASIO

I have a problem that I have been troubleshooting for months. I have two primary recording applications: Pro Tracks and Traction 2.

If I setup my gear and apps to use ASIO, Rhino plays but very distorted--unusable in fact. All other VST synths work fine.

If I setup my gear to use WDM (Tracktion 2 doesn't like it), Pro Tracks plays Rhino just fine.

I'm confused because I would imagine that Rhino is I/O driver independent.

What could be the problem? :?:

And what about Rhino with ASIO in tracktion ?

Same thing. It only works with WDM drivers set. If I enable ASIO, Rhino distorts heavily in either application.

What soundcard?
What computer specs? (CPU/Ram etc...)

I have Tracktion2 and Rhino2 at home, working fine with my M-Audio Delta 44. Rhino2 works fine on my system with eXT 1.4 BETA (standalone) ASIO as well.

Yeah, we need system specs. What latency do you have your ASIO drivers set at, as well?
Bandcamp: https://suitcaseoflizards.bandcamp.com/
Linux Mint, Waveform 13 Pro, U-He synths, Audio Damage effects,.

I made a mistake in my troubleshooting. I don't think it is just Rhino. It happens with a couple of other synths, and it now appears to be working fine in Traction 2.

I now think it is my VST to DXi converter (DirectXer).

Pro Tracks does not speak VST, just DXi.

Equipment:
Win XP
AMD 2800 CPU
EMU 0404 sound card
Digitech GNX4 "sound card"

Here's mine:
I'm using an M-Audio 2496 card running at 44.1 sample rate and a dma buffer (latency) of 256 samples. Athlon XP+ 1600 with 1 Gb ram. I only use the ASIO drivers for all soft synths and hosts and can run Rhino 2 in eXT1.35, Tracktion 2, SX2.2, Chainer, Podium 1.41.

Sounds good :)

Ive had this problem before, with Rhino and other synths.

I believe it is an issue with host VSTI identification versus multiple synth instances. If the host thinks you have two of the same VSTI installed (ie, version 1.09 and 1.10 but same .dll name), then one will work and the other will distort. A work around is to make sure you only have one instance of each synth on your system. Another is to give each .dll instance a distinctly different name; so the host properly identifies them as distinct entities.

I tried your suggestion but it did not change the problem. Unless somehow old synths are hidden. Pro Tracks is not native VST so I simply deleted any duplicates in the Directixer program. Even reinstalled DirectIxer to clean things out.

Thanks,

Jack

Have you tried using regedit to check for registry instances of Rhino?

Post

No, but at next break I will. Working from home has its advantages. :).

I really appreciate all of the suggestions especially given that this doesn't appear to be a Rhino problem.

I uninstalled Rhino, cleaned out all registry entries. Reinstalled it and now it does not appear anywhere as a plugin. Going from bad to worse.

Can I just download and install the demo from Big Tick and place my key file in the subsequent root folder?

Exactly. Be sure to delete any leftover rhino.dll and rhino2.dll on your system before installing.

I am ashamed to say, this was it--latency. If I just draw the latency control back a bit, no problem.
