and no one mentions "The Final Cut" which I always loved...not my favorite, but I wouldn't want to give it up. But then I don't have favorites when it comes to songs/albums each has their own distinction, and what they mean to me personally...

i agree... alot of Floyd fans don't give The Final Cut a chance... i think that in terms of songwriting (not production or presentation) its better than The Wall...

Odd. I personally like the but ehat I like best is "Saucerfull Of Secrets", "Atom Heart" and "Meddle", along with unreleased/single-only stuff from that era, "Obscured By Clouds" and "Ummagummma".
"Piper" is too raw and hectic for me tho I love the record, and the later stuff (concluding with The Wall as I don't like anything post the Wall and even the Wall and Animals aren't my kind of thing) is great, divine, powerfull music but it's kinda too great for my personal taste.
Personal favourite track: "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun".

I'm sorry but I find the wall to be an album/concept that is impossible to compare to any other...there is just nothing else like it...it's truely a brilliant album but clearly defined the split in opinions and artistic tastes in the band...

philipc68, you brought up some stuff i didn't know about the early floyd, i'm gonna have to check out those books...
i was thinking about floyd a lot today, two points:
i kind of forgot how much Syd influenced me on guitar, the idea of attacking it and making sounds/improvising without being some kind of technical wizard...but the rest of the band were in complete sync, they were able to pull off these cool noise jams and sound bits in the middle of a pop song...the beatles did it with studio fx and such, but stuff like "Intersteller Overdrive" and the end of "Bike" were cool in how it was the band performing/improvising together...almost a punk attitude...they also remind me of Can a bit in their approach.....
the other thing i was thinking is that for floyd to get to the point where they could make "The Dark Side of the Moon" and all the others that have been mentioned, they had a wide open attitude about music/sound, they kept experimenting and evolving without fear of being too weird or inexcessible..."On the Run" was the first sequenced/repetitive synth thing that i heard, unlike anything before..."welcome to the Machine" blew my mind the first time i heard it as well...i personally really like Animals as well, it's so pointed and angry, but it is recorded so well, and ther's all the extended jammy part with SFX, but it never gets self indulgent...
