In summary this time around:

Software is complex, and most things work well out of the box, but not everything sometimes. I understand that which is why we keep communication lines open (I'd rather it not be a result of public forum complaining, but if it is, so be it).

Feel free to give us a phone call 800-877-6377 or 320-235-9798 to get things going or to ping us with a friendly reminder.

We aren't perfect, so i appreciate you guys holding our feet to the fire and resolving anything that comes along.

Garth,

that sounds good - particularly since I still haven't been able to make the move to my favorite sample playback device (there is the free sfz, and the 60-100 buck sfz+ player, which both play sfz's fine).

You can download the free version here. And I'm confident it'll be possible to get the required info from René whether or not the free player has an up to date sfz implementation.
That said, even if it doesn't, getting the features sfz and sfz+ players support so far working flawlessly in translator conversions would be a very big step already. I also have Dimension, and will have the pro version to test these translations on.

My current concern is only in regards to the level of conversions you'll be able to implement. Kontakt and Gig conversions to sfz, K2 and gig3 conversions to sfz? The reason why I'm so focused on using the sfz format - it's highly customizable, the players are extremely efficient and their resampling/pitch shifting quality and streaming efficiency are the most impressive I've seen to date (I'm not working for nor recieving any favors from rgc btw).
I own quite a few libraries that I want to use with a different player than gs2.5 or gs3 kontakt1/2, simply to get the maximum out of this setup possible.. i.e. one of the sfz players.

So if you tell me that you'll be able to implement these conversions into translator and if you commit yourself to that, I'll do the same and lend a hand in testing. I'll be able to spend a couple of hours on this every day (from Nov 8 on).

Great! Let's go.

The misunderstanding about the SFZ player (according to what I know, I haven't looked at it in awhile, so I may be wrong) is that it does not apply all the settings that the SFZ format allows, which includes some of the more esoteric stuff that the Kontakt or Giga files incorporate.

That's what I meant by not truly being able to test it. The format and the playback were truly two different things.

To elaborate:

The SFZ format allows for keyswitching, controller switching, all of which Giga and Kontakt do every day.

SFZ player does not read these, only SoudnFont at best.

Even if SFZ player reads SFZ, it doesn't mean it PLAYSBACK keyswitching, controller switching, etc. And note it says nothing about these features in the FAQ's.

Macintosh Version? Same capability as the PC version?

That's been promised for over 3 years. Still not even close....

I too am hanging on good sfz conversion. Good Luck!

Hi Daniel (danielbailey):

How do you know we're not close (wink wink)? =) C'mon we've been through this a number times with you.

Most Mac users use or at least have access to Windows machines, so there's really not much demand for the Mac version; not that it's not important, but we rarely get requests for it. When people ask about it, they just say "oh, I'll just use my Win machine and move the files over."

In fact, you can get a PC for cheaper than Translator costs. =)

In fact, in our studios, the Macs and PC's are networked up tightly - we actually use Win Translator to translate files that exist on the Mac drive and write the destination to the Mac drive. Panther and Tiger make it really easy.

But the Mac version is going to get it's upgrade, and it's going to be an incredible one, with all the great features and completeness that the Windows version has. You should see our cross-platform framework. But the lack of a Mac vresion doesn't wind up being make or break for anyone.

Regarding SFZ:

We did some work on it last night, fixed some bugs and I wish we had Dimension here. Buy it's coming along. The next build will be functional as far as I can tell. I figure I'll get the SFZ Player to work on it and leave the other SFZ Format-capable stuff but not playable in SFZ player alone.

sounds good. Will the free version be updated too so we can test it?

I do bulk conversions every day with Translator, as long as most of our customers, so what you say is a falsehood.

I checked your posting record and I found that you complained about this on KVR (not to us) on April 15th of this year, and not to us, as we don't have any Bug Report or issue that reports this. So you've been having this problem for 6 months now and yet you haven't said anything about other than complain about this anonymously it on a forum.

Don't you want to do something about it? First, stand up and sign your emails. Secondly, if you are having issues, contact us. You probably are using an older version or aren't doing it right; honestly, Translator is used by thousands of people and they don't have your problems; hopefully, that's good news to you in that with a simple email, report, or phone call to Chicken Systems, you can solve your problem, instead of complaining about it anonymously every 6 months abut it.

HTH,
First of all I wasn't complaining as much as seeing if this was a common problem, according to others it was. Second, I did send an e-mail and you requested that I send the files that crash the program during translation. I have 13 or so CDrs that crash the program! My impression is that you would take those files I send you and work out the bugs for the next release, so I just went with smaller translations. Now I may be guilty of assuming too much, so what exactly can be gained from me taking the time to extract every file that causes a crash and send them? And what could I be doing wrong? I have a few CDs that work fine all the way through.

Post

If you send just one, that likely represents the problem with the others. So fix one, fix the rest (most likely). Most translations have been in Translator for years, so any problems are usually minimal.

Happy to help ASAP.

How are things going on the sfz side?

Good, the next build will likely be thoroughly tested as far as the sfz player goes.

Some of our confusion had to do with our beta version of the SFZ+ player, which somehow did NOT load SFZ files. We never looked at just the player, cause we assumed that the player would be the same as the SFZ+ thing.

SFZ supports The SFZ format. But the + version is at this time not supported as yet. I do expect that to eventually happen. But if you contact `Rene he can explaine the situation much better.

yes, SFZ+ has never supported sfz files. Only the free player from rgc, and now dimension, plus a couple of samplers out there, like Highlife and Short Circuit.
