Strange, when I copy an event and try and paste it, it pastes vertically into the track below it instead of next to the copied part. What gives?

In your case, you want to move the bar/beat line to the place where you want the data to be placed, then paste.

Great except now where's the bar/beat line? As you can see, I'm new to this.

I just figured it out. You have to make sure the track you're working non is lit because whichever track is active is where the pasted event will go to.

There you go. Also, sometimes you need to click in the track area as well if you're pasting automation events.
