Every community goes through periods of ups and downs. For what it's worth, KvR has always seemed to be a pretty stable and positive environment. There are communities out there with HUGE problems with flame wars and egos and so forth, and in comparison KvR is quite nice.

Not to minimize the issue, but just to say that I think we still have a very good thing here. It can be better of course.

I keep coming back here because at the end of the day it's one of the only places on the web where people can really feel part of a lively community of friends - and sometimes that means warts and all I think most of the time though people here are mature and differences are resolved amicably but because it's alive you will always get ups and downs - sometimes one needs to learn how to roll with it. Just check out how this 50 page thread has gone to see how even a controversial issue can be discussed in HPC - it is entirely possibly to have civilised discussions despite the heat here on KVR and it shows that even when it gets sour at times there's no reason why things can't be chilled again.

Sure, I try 'n help out if it's a legitmate request for knowledge, but when some newbie comes along demanding to know which is the best 'synth' I can't help myself...

yeah but those threads are also a means for bragging and boasting as well. I gotta admit the idea of someone actually be able to decide what is the "best" is laughable at best (pun intended). However even in those pissing matches sometimes a little ray of insight comes through.

When I was in my early and mid 20's after getting out of the service I worked for a moving company owned by two brothers. They were the thugs of their town in the 50's. One 'Dave' is by far the stupidest boss I ever had. He didn't even make it past middle school...yet all these years I have carried with me some wisdom from him. He once said "you can learn something from everyone, no matter how smart they are or are not" (not verbatim)...well him making the statement itself was proof enough for me...often when reading newbie threads I keep that in my mind.

Yeah I will admit that when I see such a thread and my first thought is "not another" ...but if you're willing to keep your eyes wide open anyone can benefit from them.

You've earned a great deal of respect from me already.

I think that'd be a fantastic idea. Compile a list of best VST's for certain uses (based on popular opinion, of course), then divide the list by freeware and payware.
