I've got quite attached to the "KiloMix" demo song that comes with ReBirth. It's from 1998 ... old enough? :)

Fun thing I did with it was ReWire rebirth into Reason and placed it through the MClass Mastering Suite, then exported it and put it on my MP3 player. It rocks :)

The wealth of different sounds YMO came up with and combined into catchy pop is amazing. Considering they did it in the 70's, early eighties it's even more amazing, though it's not necessary to make any "well, it's 25 years ago since they made this"-concessions to enjoy those albums. I'm very thankful for the CD re-releases that have arrived the last couple of years and that's given them a deserved revival. I was far too young to hear them when they were at their peak. As Kraftwerk - the obvious pioneeer among pioneers in electronic pop - YMO had a great sense of humour, too. And money. Just look at the gear list (actually, a bill) supplied with the "BGM" album. These guys made synthetic sounds fun, cool and mainstream. Other people (Stevie Wonder & Co., George Clinton & Co., Herbie Handjob...) also made them sexy and funky. And there you go! Ready for the 80's explosion of synth-driven pop.

I think the limited musical value of e.g. Carlos's efforts are suggested by the number of artists who have tried to copy her - few, if any. It means she didn't inspire anyone. I mean really, really inspire anyone musically (not just in choice of tools). The film music she did seriously harms the otherwise excellent movies. As sound designer, undoubtedly up there, but as a musician... Turned off. Everyone's talking about Turned on Bach as if it was a classic album. It's not. It's a curiosity, worth hearing, but who can be bothered to listen to it much more than once?

Vangelis... don't konw much about him except the Bladerunner soundtrack, which I think works very well. And that theme from that film about that christian athlete who didn't run on sundays. Chariots of Fire. Can't imagine anyone seriously listening to that sort of thing outside a cinema.

Good as Ae are, are you thinking of 'classic' in the sense of 'quite recent'?

Ooh, can we have a shout for the Forbidden Planet soundtrack (I can't remember who did it OTTOMH)... that's some seriously cool shit. Oh, and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

And yeah, I agree with skipscada on the subject of ToB.

i used to listen to heaven and hell front to back while programming my atari 1200 xl. i now have a copy from itunes (each side was a buck). it's nice that it turns itself over at the end of side a :D

I'm a big fan of stuff like Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, too.

For those who are interested in the blend of electronics and classical, you might want to check out the songs on my site www.chaosresearch.de (Shameless self-promotion, yes I know...)

For my tastes Chariots of Fire is a bit on the cheesy side but I especially like "1492 - Conquest of paradise" soundtrack, "Bladerunner" soundtrack and "Soil Festivities" by Vangelis.
