I compress snare and toms reeeeeeeally hard to get the sound I want, which makes it nessecary to use a gate to avoid long and noisy tails. Any suggestions for a great gate that won't sound clicky when opening or closing? It wouldn't hurt if it's free, but I'm willing to pay a lot. I need the best software gate that is out there! :)

Feel free to try out the gate in TrackPlug, we've got a good transparent sounding gating algorithm in there.

There is also a little gating demo on our old TrackPlug page:

If there aren't too much hits on the toms on each song, try cutting the events and make short fade ins and a bit longer fade outs for each hit.

...if you want to go gree, try the MIDI gaters from Klanglabs (Microgater) and one by dfx at Smart Electronix. GVST has a pretty decent one too, but i'd recommend the Klanglabs one most. Its not very pretty, but it cuts very clean and releases are really smooth.

yup golden gate is the best from sinus.. Free demo that pretty much is like the full version except a couple pop ups here and there.. But it is only like 20 bucks for the full version.. NEVER seen a better one.. I like it better than sonitus
The following statement is true.

Talking of Sonitus. There appears to be no way to ask Cakewalk questions so can someone here confirm whether the download version for 39.00 includes the VST version. It only mentions the DirectX on the purchase page.

Wonder why nobody has mentioned the Slim Slow Slider gates - there are 2 versions: Auto Gate and Side Chain Gate, and they're free...

I have used the SSS gates. They are very good but the only two I really like are the Voxengo (on Voxformer) and the Sonitus.
