Also, if the speaker was the rocking, it would have to be pretty damn gentle (points at laws of physics).

Yeah, around few meters to cancel out a 55hz tone. :lol:

Now if we would just step back to normal conversation and forget the squashballs, for they aren't the reason to those dips. And let's talk about room modes.

b.t.w. whether you know it or not (and I strongly suspect not) the dips are fs related and appear deeper at harmonics thereof when squashballed.

Although, as I say it's all guesswork without the time domain data.

Still, you'd know that huh?

Seriously, let's forget the squashballs. If there's one thing the graphs prove is that they are NOT the cause of those dips. They are most likely room mode related. That's something where my acoustics knowledge ends and I need help.

ok I just found a place in orders of 7 more enlightening when it comes to room acoustics.

and well, those dips really are speaker placement related (room mode as well) and there are certain remedies. Looks like I need to get bass traps tuned to these room dimensions.

I also found out that I really should fill these stands with sand and not decouple them with anything, which nuffink already pointed out (but I needed to get a second opinion of course). There's plenty of discussion on the merits of good decoupling, which is the case with the now infamous squash balls, as the graphs also point out.



And then were back on topic,

what kind of sand and rocks inside speaker stands offer best broadband frequency response? :lol: :lol:

Any old sand will do. Just make sure it's totally dry. The best way that I've found to do this is to buy a turkey roasting tray, fill it with sand and bake it in the oven for half an hour.
Can't guarantee that it's audiophile but it won't rot wood or rust mild steel.
Plus you get a turkey roasting tray which is useful for roasting turkeys in.

was actually just taking the piss on that audiophile sand. ;)

The only thing I'm worried about is wether it's dry or not. Guess I'll just do it the way would sterilise aquarium sand before the fish go there (similar to your turkey tray tip).

The stands are wooden, designed and built by yours truly, and I don't want them going moldy come next year.

And yeah, when the time comes for those bass traps they'll be of a proper type. In fact next weekend I'm going to see how my friend handled bass trapping in his studio.

I really doubt that one could figure out anything going on around 55Hz from a recording made with a microphone in a room and analyzed with a FFT analyizer but what do I know.

Besides, if anything, lowpassing (as you yourself said) caused by the ball thingies would have affected phase relations/group delays around the fs and not in what definetly is the stopband for them (as such small objects would have nothing to do with frequencies of wavelength several times their size).
