Just wondering if anyone uses Live 5 exclusively, without Cubase/Sonar etc.

Has live caught up in terms of DAW capability?

I would like to see more tools such as slice, zoom, delete- cubase style.

But is the audio engine up to professional standard? What I mean is- Would Live be enough for a professional recording "one stop shop" or do we have to wait for version 6?
It's the only host I have now. I recently upgraded my PC and formatted the C drive, the only host on it is Live 5. It's amazing... try the demo. You can really get detailed in the sequencer now and I have had no complaints on the sound. I do use Camelphat, Ozone and Flatblaster (reaktor 5) to enhance it though.

riley... or anyone else.

How can I loop audio in a clip without using a warp engine.

If I know a loop is 120 then I don't think I need to use the warp engine, but if I turn it off the loop button is greyed out, so I can't click it.

You can do it using "Follow Actions" (check the manual for more info on how to access these).

From the Follow Actions section in Launch properties, simply select the length of the loop and then tell it to repeat. This way it can loop without warping.

You must turn on warp to loop.

BTW, I also use Ableton exclusively.

just leave the warp on, and set it's mode to repitch. That way, if the clip bpm matches Live (which is what I thought you might be infering), you won't hear any pitch change... and at the same time it won't be use any of the ableton timestretching alogos.

yes that is the way I was thinking before, but I don't want any warp to be turned on at all.

Leaving the warp to pitch is easier than the follow action thing though.

I'm just thinking for recording clips I want the best quality I can get.

thanks everyone.

I don't see any reason why I will not move 100% to LIve soon.

Well yes, that would work too, but strictly speaking Ableton's timestretch algo is still engaged  .

Not that using the algo is a problem of course - it's great :)

Using the Follow Actions method *might* get better results, and with less CPU overhead.

Why is the timestretch algo engaged when repitching? That makes no sense...

Because if the tempo changes - or is slightly different from the analysis Live does of the clip you have imported (which it may be by even a tiny amount), then it will speed it up/slow it down accordingly (and the pitch will change in the process of course). So the timestretch is engaged ready for action.

Post

PS... Live has 5 different timestretch algos, of which "repitch" is one algo. THey all behave differently, and the repitch algo is the least CPu intensive. The "complex" algo is around 10 times as intensive as the others  but is of course very capable. Anyone new to Live will do well to check out the difference between the five algos, because choosing the correct one for the loop is critical to getting good results.

I tried to use Live exclusively but not only is the midi editing primitave compared to what I am use to (Logic), there is no volume control for external hardware. Program change happens on the clip level with no option to work on the track level. I worked with it exclusively for a month and then went back to Logic. I didn't notice LIve's sound being bad when I used it but when I switched back to Logic, I noticed a huge improvement in sound quality. YMMV.

There is a new Live 5 Power book coming out this month. Buy it, download the demo and go through the book. You will know if it fills your needs. I think it's enough for a lot of people though not me yet.

I seldom use loops, I appreciate the answers you got, now I know how if I need to.

Thanks for asking!

In case you haven't seen these already, here are a few lengthy threads on Live's sound quality compared to other DAWs:
