What is the difference between the two? Do they both sound the same?

google is your friend, the body is different, the strings are different, the neck is fatter and flatters, even the tuners are quite different (I would say machine heads, but classical guitars have rollers)...they hve about as much in common as a bugle and a tuba...;)

I'm starting to get into flamenco style music. Just wondered if you could use a regular acoustic guitar for that. Probably not?

Post

You conceivably could, it just wouldn't sound quite the same, and might be much harder. Flamenco isn't usually played with a pick, and I've alway found steel treble strings to be bugger hard to play fast with my fingers.

Post

You would want a nylon string guitar for that. Classical guitars work fine. Rasgueado on a steel string will trash your fingernails, and a lot of the pulgar technique is uncomfortable at best on these thin strings.

Post

Sure you can use a steel string. But, you'll be branded a heretic by the flamenco police. I know. I live in exile thanks to my mando-flamenco blasphemy. :)

Also steel strings will shred your nails faster than nylon ones. And then there is the question of sound. A flamenco guitar is not the same as a classical. A flamenco is built lighter, has lower action and is all about the attack, not sustain. And traditional flamenco guitars use friction pegs. And big, ugly tap plates, called a pickguard on a steel string.

However, five years in a cave in Spain and you'll be drenched in duende. Go for it!

How hard would it be for a hobbyist bass player to learn flamenco?

the acoustic would have too much sustain...need the nylon...;)

How hard do you want it to be? I know some skilled people who can make it a living hell. :)

If you've got solid bass chops with your plucking hand, it will help alot. Although, unlike the bass, you will need to practice! :)

If you have the desire and passion for it, nothing will stop you. Not even the armchair flamencoists at Kvr.

You can get some books, but flamenco is not an intellectual pursuit. Find a teacher where you live over there. Or just listen to recordings and then play some. Repeat as required.

Bummer, Hink. All your relationship counselling must use up most of your time. What about your needs, Hink?

This has really been helpful. Thanks...

After using RealGuitar and various loops cd's that didn't give me that authentic sound, I'm going to invest some serious time into this.

Is there a particular name brand guitar I should be looking for?

This woman lives by me and is reputed to be the finest female flamenco guitarist in the world. The link to her guitar info is dead, I guess.
