What is a fixed filter?
What are all those knobs for?

Post

A fixed filter doesn't let you change the centre frequency of each band, kind of like a graphic EQ.

All those knobs adjust the volume of each filter's output.

Hey, all. Sorry I didn't chime in sooner, but I've been completely f**king swamped. The popularity of this plug took us a little off-guard.

Anyways, to answer the question, it's kind of hard to explain what a fixed filter bank does. Apologies to Shamann, who is otherwise my most favoritest customer of all, but I think likening it to a graphic EQ is a little misleading.

I'd suggest maybe hitting the Audio Damage page and downloading the manual, as it goes in to this issue in some detail. But I'll copy the pertinent text here:

To avoid possible confusion, a couple of things are worth mentioning explicitly. First, despite the presence of a bunch of knobs marked with frequencies, the 907A is not an equalizer. If the term equalizer was coined to describe devices which amplify or attenuate ranges of frequencies to even out (that is, equalize) the overall frequency content of a signal, the 907A might accurately be described as an unequalizer. Second, the 907A had a completely different filter architecture and implementation than the filter found in the Minimoog, and hence does not posses “that Moog filter sound”.

The eight bandpass filters in the 907A have rather narrow bandwidths. Hence, even when they're all full on, there are still some holes in the spectrum. The filters also have a non-linear phase response. If that doesn't make any sense, let me put it like this: your ears will tell your brain "hey, that sounds kind of like a vocoder or some shit" and they wouldn't be totally incorrect. The 907A is (more or less) half of a vocoder, and is definitely in the same family of effects.

Now, all that said, what the hell kind of good is a filter if it doesn't squeal like a little piggie? Well, that's up to you to decide. There are a metric assload of 4-pole filters out there in plug-in land, and we thought it might be interesting to explore some different topologies. I think you'll find this most useful if you use a lot of pads, drones, or noise-beds in your music, but that's just my opinion.

As always, your money back if you find out I'm wrong.

I guess it did seem like I was likening it to such. Sorry about that, I just meant that the fixed centre frequency was the same kind of concept. This definitely isn't like an EQ.

Another excellent AD plug and you definitely have my cash for phase 2. Chris, you guys, like, rawk.

Cheers for that explanationn Chris.
If it works well on drones I just got to try it with my didje :)
P.S. got rid of my other delays too when I bought dubstation. Nice one

Is any bundle gathering the filterbank and dubstation planned ?
:)
