I'm looking for a good MB compressor, so before I start demoing the hundreds of them that are offered I thought you good people here could may be able to narrow it down a bit . There really is no price range as I find the pricier ones are not that outrages. I'm only interested in native plugins, don't want any DSP cards near my totally stable system.

I don't use much multiband comp, but I find the one in ozone to be just fine when I want one. I really like neodynium, which isn't multiband by frequency but by amplitude . . . nice.
Grist for the glamour mill.

What do you need it for? mastering or mixing.
Ive stuffed around with a few and i hate em all.
Apparently soniformer is the only plug that doesnt kill your audio in the way that current MB's do.
Its not a multiband though per say

Off topic, but something I've noticed about Neodynium is that its really just a glorified version of the FL Waveshaper, with the difference being that you have to know what you are doing when using the Waveshaper. I was going to buy neodynium but then I realized this and so I saved money on this
I haven't had the need to do multiband compression but I think I'd probably either use one from this thread
or make my own in synthedit.

Sonitus has a really nice 5 band comp.Sounds good and the price is very fair. These were originally coded by one of the guys from Waves.

Rarely mixing mainly mastering or as an option in my main output. Also I'm not concerned if it's a CPU pig becuase my PC is a brute and I never seem to exceed 50% in any of my projects.Jonny Mumra wrote:What do you need it for? mastering or mixing.

Poni.
I would try and avoid M/B for mastering unless its absolutely necessary.
I really believe they are not required for 95% of mastering and a lot of people feel they should be using one.
I'm not saying this is you.
But if a specific frequency/instrument needs taming to the point i have to pull out a M/B compressor then i would always suggest going back to the mix.
If this isn't possible and you have tried everything else then id think about it.
Anyway, give soniformer a go. Its one of the few i haven't played with. And Ive heard it wont perturb your sonic texture to the point of negating its use.

Mmh, a multiband its not a must have for mastering, but it can help to preserve a transparent sound. But insted of a multibandcompressor a good singleband like the Marquis from Voxengo or the Sonalksis SV315 are often sufficient.
With wrong settings, a multibandcompressor its also a good equalizer and can change the complete mix. I think thats is the mainargument against using one at the mastering stage.

Take a look at Voxengo Soniformer. I use Vintage Warmer, which has a warmer sound but not as intrinsically easy to operate like the WaveArts multiband compressor. Soniformer and Vintage Warmer are not just basic multiband compressors--they are different beasts.

Where do you got the info that they were coded by Waves? Just curious ...
