[using the 3 band version 1.6]

Thanks for this great tool, it is very welcome.

One of the things I found instantly attractive about the GUI of the single band was the visual icons for each filter type, I really liked being able to see the various types. I wonder if it i'd be possible to put a small picture of each filter type next to each filter on the drop down list? (or would they be too small?)

Another vote for scroll wheel to change the Q value.

Good luck with your project,

Mike

I tried downloading the 1-band and 4-band eq but now when I try to access the page, it says "This page has been deprecated...". Is this a permanent removal or temporary? At least the 3-band is still up.

PLPar manual (chapter 7, page 12) - Fun with high precision allpass filters

Me and bmanic had a quick arguement about allpass filters and how they work. Well after a quick mixing of terms (and stupid me still no getting it) we did an empirical test:

1. Use your favourite host with full plugin latency compensation.

2. Set up a track to play on two channels at the same time

3. insert PLpar on one track, allpass filter mode.

4. Listen to the audio while playing with the frequency slider (wide Q)

6. Hurt, because your jaw dropped on the floor after hearing the highest quality phaser in existance.

Sure it's a bit CPU heavy for a phaser, but at least you can use it as a master bus effect without fearing for your life and credentials. Itchycoo Park 2006 anyone?

I take it that phase-linear mode was turned off? If so, wouldn't be PLParEQ be the same as any other RBJ-based parametric EQ (=almost all of them) that oversamples by two?

Post

For allpass mode you can't turn on linearphase (laws of physics preventing).

Yeah, PLpar oversamples by two, but using windowed sinc interpolation, so even the allpass delay gets more resolution.

The implementation is explained in good detail on davids homesite.

I wouldn't say it's the same as any run-of-the-mill phase warped filter. There's just more resolution, and it really can be heard. in fact the allpass summing is a good test. Less resolution would kill transients, imaging and sound grainy/mushy.

What do YOUR ears answer to this question? :?:

Haha. Yeah, but ears were mostly irrelevant to my question.

Then I obviously didn't understand your question. Care to explain? :)

An all pass filter can either be 'off' (acting as a pure delay) , or it can be on, in which case it introduces different delays at different frequencies. IF PLParEQ was working in "phase linear" mode, an all pass filter would therefore do absolutely nothing (except possible add some distortion from the 8-fold process). Kingston informs me that PLParEQ doesn't give you the option, which makes sense.

If PLParEq doesn't use the phase linear mode for the all pass, then it's "just" a regular RBJ-based all pass filter - albeit with apparently superior upsampling. I wouldn't think upsampling would really be that beneficial for all pass filtering, since all pass filtering is a linear process. Well, at least if the filter wasn't adjusted/automated or didn't have some kind of modulation; perhaps with nicely interpolated time-variant filter 'cutoff' and resonance, it would sound much smoother than the 44.1kHz equivalent.

Anyway, I'm home now and cubase is just a couple of clicks away - I should check it out for myself. :)

Thanx autloc,

I thought you were talking about the eq in general.

Best wishes, FRitz

Can't you get the 1 and 4 band versions anymore???

Post

i have sonar 4 and have some trouble with the 3 band version not allowing the audio to start when i hit play. sonar sends that message "audio stopped." i have to hit play several times before it finally comes on. this always happens right after inserting it then occasionally thereafter.

Looks like the free EQs have disappeared!
