I'm going to Baku this week, and wouldn't mind meeting up with someone who could show me the sights and sounds of this great Caspian city! The last time I was there I sort of trudged around on my own, and didn't get the full picture, I think.
Any Azeri KvRians?

Have a nice trip! I spent a few weeks in Baku some years ago, and by chance found a jazz club with three old men playing the most fantastic jazz. Don't ask me the name of the club or where it was, though.
If you get a chance, take a drive through the old oilfields just outside the city, they are eerie. Last week I blew up a B&W photograph I took there and I am having it framed to put on the wall of my home office.

It's amazing, the way every oil pumping device that has ever been erected still stands, left behind to rust. It's quite sad, because Baku is so beautifully located in that bay, and now it all looks like your worst nightmare. I don't know why people don't make more movies there... I'll definately take my camera this time.
I'll be looking for culture, of course - I know the classical scene is very good. One of the most important music conservatories in the USSR was in current Azerbaijan. I bought a 6CD set of Azeri classical music. Great stuff. I got the price down from 350,000 to 290,000 manat
I'm looking forward to it. Got to get some caviar, of course, and I'll look for a Tar or a Duduk, as well...

If you find two duduks, I'll gladly take one off your hands.
My visit to Baku was oil-related as well, at the time I worked for a software company and we installed a Document Management System for a joint BP/Statoil project, so we drove through the pump desert every day. IIRC the opening shots of a Bond movie were from there.

I'll let you know if I ever get to go to Moscow. I work on ships, so I guess St. Petersburg is more likely...
