I love movie soundtracks. Unfortunately, there aren't many that are truly memorable. I've compiled a short list of my favs. Please suggest more good ones that are worth listening to.

All these soundtracks have a memorable themes.

1. 25th Hour -- Terrence Blanchard. Not just a jazz musician, this guy OWNED with one of the most haunting and memorable melodies I've ever heard. Stunningly good.

2. The Last of the Mohicans -- Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. There's some controversy over there being two composers here. Nevertheless, it's a great soundtrack.

3. Braveheart -- James Horner. So good that Horner even stole his own melodies to put in the crap movie Bicentenial Man.

I like most John Williams scores. You pretty much know that almost anything he puts out is going to be well orchestrated and composed.

I also like Danny Elfman, some Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), Tan Dun (Hero, Croutching Tiger) Michael Giacchino (mostly for his Incredibles score) and Don Davis for his work on the Matrix trilogy.

Davis's postmodernist (minimalistic) approach to the Matrix trilogy worked really well and is one of my favorite scores.

Michael Giacchino did a great job bringing back the Big Band Jazz sound for the Incredibles.

As far as the old school goes, I like Ennio Morricone (The good, the bad, and the ugly) Bernard Herrman (Psycho, Vertigo-he composed most of Alfred Hitchcock's other films), Alfred Newman (you know, the 20th Century Fox Fanfare), John Barry (Most of the James Bond series)...

Funny you should mention that...I was born without legs and played E.T. in all the scenes where E.T. fell down in the movie. I went to the 20th anniversary premiere of the film in which John Williams and his orchestra played the sountrack live in sync with the film! It was one of the most unique, incredible musical experiences I have ever experienced. Truly he is a genius composer.

Requiem for a dream - Clint Mansell.
Or alternatively - my version.

Final Fantasy TSW, still my favourite soundtrack.
Andy is a support ninja.

Am I the only person that thinks John Williams is massively overrated?

In a way, I see where you're coming from. I mean he does rehash motifs and themes by inversion often, but he does quality work.

I think that in many ways, Danny Elfman is more innovative than him, and is more willing to take a risk by introducing something unorthodox into his scores, but with John Williams, he excels when it comes to writing quality music.

It's just that thus far, he composed some of the most memorable music- compared to other composers, so it makes sense why he's considered one of the greats and one of my favorites...

Well, there are plenty that think he cribs from Holst too much. ;)

The original Star Wars score is absolutely amazing. It blows my mind in terms of the depth of musicianship.

Though I'd never listen to a soundtrack without the corresponding visuals other than to analyse and learn something from it.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

Don't get me wrong, I like John Williams. I just think he's a tad overrated.
I saw Revenge of the Thingy on DVD about a week ago (God it was crap!) but I can't remember any of the music from it. Maybe he's running out of ideas!

You can't beat classics like Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Moricone and more recently, Angelo Badalamenti.

Also, Conrad Salinger is one of the most underrated composers ever
