hello. lately i have been using a lot of Bass Guitar Soundfonts.. SF2's. I find that the soundfonts I have been using are a little "lifeless" and wanted to add some effects. Can u please suggest some free effects that typically would be utilized to enhance a bass guitar sound????!!! Specifically, i would like to make the bass guitar sound more "funky"... thanks very much

A hint of fuzz and wah never hurt Bootsy. I like a slow, shallow flange myself (in mono).

Bootsy.... that is exactly what i was talking about (in terms of style/sound). what type off effects would assist me in sounding like a Bootsy or P-funk... is there a good freeware fuzz or flanger, etc???? thanks very much.

I must be psychic :-) I actually record my bass with overdrive/fuzz and use (gasp!) paid for flangers usually (Sonic Foundry or Sonitus Modulator). Try the Kjaerhus suite for free wah and flnager though - they work well enough.

Yeah that Kjaerhus Auto-Wah should be helpful. Distortion will help the bass to stand out, even at mild levels.

I just went and had a play with the Kjaerhus auto-wah on a lead guitar part - it didn't stay on in the end as I decided I( should just leave the guitar sound as it was, but I managed to get some seriously "out there" wah sounds from it just by whizzing through the presets as a good place to start.

Yet, sometimes samples will have more soul than somebody who can't play properly. SOMETIMES an untrained player has lots of soul, though. Who can say?
I totally agree with dp and bduffy-- the auto-wah is where it's at. Don't necessarily stick to Kjaerhus, though. Wurr Audio has the Green Wah that does a great job, and I'm sure there are others.
If you're ambitious, you could use an envelope-follower that sends MIDI (I know of one, but I'd have to track it down) and then pick your favourite filter to place in-line with it.

Before you apply FX's you should always start with EQ and compressor (long release time, attack depends on the material).

The midi programming may hold the key to putting life into the "playing", maybe groove quantizing from the bass drum as well as pushing and pulling against the beat in various areas of the tune, warm compression and a hint of chorus/wah sounds good, lose a little off the very low end to help it stand out from the drums may help too!
