I have been meaning to ask this for years and am finally brave enough to ask. I am new to using FL Studio, and I plan to create electronica type tracks. My problem is with the mastering, I can never get it to sound rich, full, and clear like everyone else. I either have too much bass, or too little.
I was told to use compressors and equalizers, and I have spent hours tweaking it but none of the settings sound anything like other songs I hear where you can hear every single sound clearly and loud. How is this done? I use headphones to create music, I live in an apartment and don't want to blast my music so I really do not have a choice since I heard that you shouldn't use headphones when making music. Thanks for your time.

Have you tried multi band compressors, a hint of reverb and a little careful limiting, compare your tracks against a similar genre, do lots and lots of reading and listening! Good luck!

Search the data base for multiband comps (use carefully though, trial and error!), have a look at SIR impulse response for imprinting high end priced sounds onto your mix!!

If you have to use headphones, get audio-technica ATH-M40fs....they're true sounding headphones. Don't obsess on the mastering part of things if you are just starting out. Mastering will only take a mediocre track so far...
The most important thing to focus on (from a musician's perspective) is proper mixing. You'd be surprised just how much better a track can sound when mixed well. get comfortable with using a track EQ and a track compressor before you start messing with multiband compressors on a final mixdown.
In fact, if the mixdown has significant mixing issues, a multiband compressor will probably just end up accentuating those errors.
