just a thought:

I'd really like vsti and fx to be like filterscape - no installers, simply unzip and voila.

with installers you never know which subdir is going to be made...

So what? Installers are just easier, especially when you want to uninstall.

I guess it is because there are a lot of people out there who don't really understand the idea of a shared VST folder, and what is contained within... I remember back when I was starting out... It was like, VSTwhat??? .DLwhat??? god am I glad I've learned at least that much now!

I hate installers for VSTS as well. I just wanna be able to drag and drop them in the correct dir by hand, so that when the new version of my host (Cubase) comes along which installs in a different dir I can then move it from the old dir. The uninstaller won't find the new location of it so will fail.

registry entries? why cant coders atleast use thye simple functions provided for ini files ;'(

you can even use 100% standard c libs for all that stuff.
installers are bogus, so are registry entries for storing the dll location and so on. why not just use GetModuleFileName() or etc..

some coders are a bit clueless i guess. but so are users :')

well, for commercial software like NI and etc. do you honestly believe professionals use this and make up a major part of sales? no. kiddies who want to be "like" those professionals who make fl style trance and stuff make up most of the sales, with hobbists a near second, and then professionals a minority.

the software is built for those average clueless users so they can do what they want to do without actually knowing anything at all.

i'd like to see stienberg release a tar.gz where ou have to run a make install and so on, good luck with that :)

I just love plugins without installers. U-Hes plugins are a prime example indeed. I just keep them in my vstplugins directory along with the required serials and whenever I need them on another machine I'll just copy the complete directory, enter the serial and there we go. The same goes for Energy XT and a bunch of others.
And fwiw, U-Hes plugins "install" the "other" stuff automatically the first time you call them up. No fuzz, just easy to deal with.

Probably 95% of the vst I have used no installer. I find it hard to believe that installers sre needed.

I hate installers too. It's a bloody DLL, doesn't need to be installed or uninstalled - simple copy and delete is enough. Registry keys can be generated upon first plugin initialisation.

Installers - why
