are there any freeware emulations of guitar pedal effects? Not emulations of amp cabinets... but emulations of guitar pedals..... ??? Or, are the effects found on the pedals going to be the same as those found in standard vst effects? thanks

There are some more closely modelled on specific guitar pedals, but really the effects in hardware are conceptually the same as the effects in software.
An example of something meant to be similar of a fashion to a guitar pedal is Audio Damage's Fuzz+. It is modelled on a MXR Distortion+ pedal (and adds a low-pass filer), it has a bypass switch, and the GUI is even all prettied up to look like a stompbox. It's a great distortion effect to boot.
There are others that are specifically modelled: Antti's Phase90 comes to mind and some of the Guitar Suite plugins.

There aren't a lot that look like stompboxes, to be honest. Other than some of the Audio Damge effects, there's all that stuff inside Amplitube, none of which is free.
There's a really crappy distortion thing that Steinberg put out years ago that looks like a stompbox (but sounds nothing like the label suggests, really awful).
GUI makers, when going for hardware metaphors, seemed to have focused more on rack gear.

the reason i ask about all these guitar effects... is that I have been using VB-1 Steinbeg VST bass... i wanted to add some effects, since the sound of VB-1 is somewhat boring.... i just downloaded Fuzz+... what other types of effects will enhance VB-1? Or, do i just download the Simulanalog guitar suite???? I am interested in making my bass sound "funky".. for use in House and/or Hip Hop productions. Thanks very much.

Try my first VST filter, it's free. It makes a good auto-wah (try the "Ottawa" preset) and even does some tube-amp-like distortions (or worse!).

very good freeware stompbox models you can find from www.simulanalog.org.
they are part of the Guitar Suite which also contains a great amp model of a JCM900.
Look under "Current Technology"

Here's a 12 pack. It's a little old and in need of an upgrade now but still pretty useful
