Midi Guitar with Tracktion 2

Hi,

Does anyone know how to setup a Guitar with a Midi pickup and Roland GR-33 synth pedal to use as the midi input in Tracktion? I am a far better guitarist than keyboard player.

Yes. The tricky bit is that the GR-33 uses a Midi channel per string. For pitch bend purposes, they claim. The GR can output on one channel, however, you lose the pitch bend data. You can change that from GR's system menu.

So, plug the MIDI out from the GR into your system's MIDI in. Select the Midi input to a track in T and record.

If you're on a PC, MidiYoke and MidiOx are very helpful utilities for merging and filtering the data from the GR. Expect to do some editing, unless you're a squeaky clean player in which case you are already a keyboard player.

Could you explain why I would need MidiYoke and MidiOx. At the moment I have two sets of midi connections on my PC.

I have a GR1. Today I attempted to use it with a Mackie Spike unit and Tracktion II. One change I made was to assign the Basic midi channel to 1. I then changed the voice mode from Mono to Poly. I set up pitchbend to 0 and played some Organ sounds and other keyboard type voices using SFZ and soundfont files. Works like a charm. I also fiddled a little with the GR1 sensitivity and dynamics. I did have some problems using the unit for Guitar type voices. The pitchbend is a little tricky. I set it to 3 and it works so-so. If I set the pitchbend any higher like 12, It doesn't respond to the bends quickly enough. This doesn't really matter to me as I'll record guitars with mics anyway.

Do I need a driver to use the GR-33? If so where do I get it from?

In my case no driver necessary.
I'm using TrackTion II/SPIKE.

No. All you need is a midi cable. Connect GR33 Midi Out to your Midi In.
Select the Midi Input in Tracktion and hit record. And play very clean.
