Hi Spe3d,

Thanks for this unusual kit - both kick and snare are quite resonant. Is there something special about the treatment applied or is it just the high tuning or a lack of damping?

Eg

You are welcome eg, :D

There are many many reasons why a drum sounds the way it does, some of those are the type of drum shell, the head ‘type’ and its maker, the mic’s used and their frequency response and most important how they are placed. When it comes to dampening if or not maxi packs are used, spots and pillows and again the head type etc.

I would say it’s a number of things that contribute to this particular sound – V2 will have yet other variations too :D

Sounds really good Spe3D. I would love to sample a kit for kvr. I just have to get rid of the bed and some other sutff so I can fit it in the room.

Thanks for the samples. :)

Very Nice!!

I'll use those cymbals for sure! How I would i go about mapping the kit to GM or is it already?

Thank you Genetic :D

They only take up room once fully laid out, they stack up pretty easy and you can always collapse the stands. If you don’t get too addicted and keep the kit small and stick to one kit that is :D otherwise you could run into problems – I think the biggest issue is, if the room you are going to use is too small then latent reflections from the walls might be difficult to deal with when recording – but you could use this to create a unique sound.

Yep! The General midi standard is a tad difficult to follow with a smallish kit mainly for the reason just where to place instruments (for example there is something like six entries for tom’s two snares two bass etc. now if score writers made specific scores for acoustic and electric, small and larger kits plus extra percussion elements – then the GM mapping would work well – in any case, yes for sure the RM4 kit follows the midi standard – there is a slight deviation on the DR-008 kit – if you need to move a pad to marry up with your score with the DR-008 – left click on a pad and drag it to the cell you want it to play in :D

Hi Peter, I played a few hours with your kit last night and I have to say that I love it. I don't have problem with the resonant sound, in fact I find that it's very useful in some cases and adds to the character of the kit.
A few samples (2 rides and 1 snare IIRC) sounded a bit inconsistent with the rest of the group so I made my own sfz mappings leaving them out.
As I was trying the results I got carried away and almost wrote a tune. This kit is inspirational.
Thanx again (... waiting for V2 :hyper: )

Cool :D thank you Zeoy

the big question is, should V2 be deep resonant living drums or should I dampen them down to be flat – I do like the tails on things – I may try the deeper resonance on the V2 kit to go with the high toned drums.

Second Version will also have an extra cymbal – plus more open hat, closed hat (hit with sticks) and open/close peddle crashes. Extra snare too 14 inch this time with a custom snare assembly – hopefully I will have the next version ready by the early start of next week :)

Best regards,

Peter

I think you should go on with the resonant type of sound. There are a few very good free drum kits (nskit, GSCW, Kingston ...) but none with that type of sound. Maybe I am biased towards this kind of drum sound cause the drummer I play with has a similar tone. In fact many jazz drummers prefer their kick (and snare sometimes) to be resonant with a clear tone (I think your kick produces a clear C) . If the kit is well tuned the drum sound goes to a whole new level. So to sum up: keep it singing!
