Hellou,

This is my first post in this side of the forum.

I'm quite a newbie. Now consuming a second hand copy of the Mastering & Mixing With WAVES multimedia. The EQ section seems quite interesting and well understood...but how do one know, say, the hi hat is about 8kHz and above, kick is about 100-200 Hz, etc.

I guess, the keyword is experience, but is there a commercial eq or plug-in out there whereby I could visually see in a graph the average Hz that a specific track (solo of course) is producing?

Heh, well... it's actually pretty common. ;) Some EQs will even show both at the same time-- the frequency spectrum and the adjustment curve. As you adjust the curve, you see the spectrum reflect the changes you've made. :D

I like Elemental Audio's Inspector for such things, or Voxengo's Span.

For real-time manipulation and simultaneous visualization, I give FreEQ Boy by Elevayta a good workout.

Hello Jess, when you become a little more accustomed to mixing you'll hear the freqs etc and also know where it stems from and how to deal with it, good luck!

Post

How about the WAVES EQ? The one installed doesn't seem to simulate the frequency spectrum? Si the a button that I need to click?

Someone already told me good things about Elemental Audio's Inspector , thanks!

On a similar topic, I remember there was a program or plugin that played a test tone at a certain frequency, and you had to guess what the freq was (helps to improve recognition of frequences in the audible spectrum)

does anyone know of this plugin/application, or can post links to something like it? kind of a "guess the frequency quiz"

I ask because i think learning how to identify the frequency of sounds can be more beneficial than looking at graphs, as you use your ears and not your eyes (graphs are still a great help though, don't get me wrong)

As you're asking about analysers rather than an actual Eq, I'd have to say Voxengo Span. I love that one. It has a beatiful GUI, and nowadays it's been upgraded to extend out to specific frequency ranges, for more detail. There's another older one available called FFT4 or something similar, which is good for really zooming in, and it can fill your whole screen, which is a useful feature. Can't remember the exact name or link though...sorry. Inspector is good, but it's just too small for detail.

Check out Voxengo Span - it's a freebie too. That newish metering plugin from Elemantal Audio...doesn't that one do frequency analysis too?

I don't know that I'd call the GUI "beautiful", but it's wonderfully functional.

Great analyser. I usually use Inspector instead, but it doesn't do some of the audio spectrum visualization that Span does.

Span is the thing. I use it nearly always.
In the end will be the word.

Firium does exactly this, and does a very good job at it, but is pricey.

The next FL Studio will come with an awesome one :excited:

Personally, I just use Freakascope and throw a parametric EQ after it.

Oh no....it is beautiful. It must just be me...certain combinations work for different people, but out of any GUI of absolutely any plugin, I like Span's the best. Something connects with me - I really don't know why Alexey doesn't use GUIs on his other plugins based on the Span concept. I think it's truly easy on the eye, and I can sit and watch it bounce up and down for ages :hihi:

It's a shame, but I find his other GUIs just hideously ugly. If there was a poll for "best" and "worst" GUIs, I think I'd vote for Voxengo for both. :?

..... it was the best of GUIs, the worst of GUIs...

Actually, quite confuse now. Is Elemental InspectorXL or Firium meant to do what I'm looking for?

Anyone here has both? Pls share your usage with me, thanks.

I didn't know Firium had an analyser (but it's a while since I tried the demo). I thought it was just an Eq with a few fancy bells and whistles. Inspector is the analyser.
