I was unaware that MIDI drivers could even be emulated TBH.
Is there any easy way of finding out whether drivers are running in SW mode, do you know?

MIDI lag in the physical medium does indeed exist, but is nowhere near the lag you can experience with these emulated drivers. It's not just lag either, they add a high level of variance in the timing, too - in the article posted, it nearly doubled the MIDI latency but that varied by about 1mS. The reason I've mentioned it it because I have been playing around with Cubase LE and I was having wild variation in MIDI timing, which turned out to be these emulated drivers. Having installed the fix, the timing became a lot tighter.
As to how to detect software emulation, I don't know. The last time I wrote MIDI software was last century!
