The Alesis ProLinear 720 might also be in your price range. I haven't heard them, but I'm interested.

Here's the SOS review of the (more expensive, but very similar) DSP model:

Here's a shop that sells a pair for less than 500€:

I'm pretty sure I read a review in SOS a while back... I think they covered the DSP (?) version and suggested just going for the normal ones. I think it was a + review

I've got a pair of KRK RP5's. 150USD each, total of 300.

Very nice monitors. Clear sound, can get very loud without distorting(actually, my mixer isn't capable of putting out enough power to distort on my RP5s).

IT was between these and a pair of M-Audio powered monitors at the same price. Can't recall the M-Audio model I was looking at, but what got me to go wiht the KRKs was they sound like music. The M-Audio seemed to be a fair bit more precise and a flatter response, but the M-Audio frequency response is much more suitable for listening. The M-Audio's might have gotten me if I was buying dedicated studio monitors(they were, as said, more precise), but the more natural sound of the KRKs really won me over since they are doubling as general listening speakers. The KRKs also had a better low end- I don't know how the paper specs compare, but real world performance, the low end on the KRKs sounds a hell of a lot better, and given that all the music I produce is dance stuff, and most of the music I listen to is dance, the low end is pretty imp[ortant.

I love my Fostex PM-2's. very good low end and crisp highs. I do hip hop and R&B so you know the bass is needed.

pakana - great work :-) you've obviously put in a lot of effort, so thanks :D

Great review! much more concise and detailed than the SOS stuff tends to be.

Having the list in a Wiki, perhaps KVRWiki, makes sense to me, instead having such great information sticked in a forum.

the only problem with the list of monitors your provided, is that they are pretty much all 'cheap' and are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to monitoring.

this is THE MOST IMPORTANT link in you audio chain - the monitors tell you what exactly is happening in your machine - this is the area of audio gear that YOU DO NOT want to cheap out on.

also your 'list' and brief description of the units is a recital of product marketing.

here is a REAL review of professional nearfield monitors:

http://www.prorec.com/prorec/articles.n ... enDocument

by the way - also remember to spend at least the same amount of money on treating your room as you do on your monitors (cause the best monitors in the world will sound like crap in a crappy room)

cheers.

tech, nice link. Thanks.
