I thought it might be nice to have a thread for mentioning some great musicians or composers that will always be niche attractions.

Here are a few of mine:

Steve Tibbetts. Incredible guitarist with a sensitivity to sound like few others. His style is like Jekyl & Hyde, with blistering feedback riffs melded perfectly with some of the lovliest acoustic fingerpicking you'll ever hear. Then he blends it all with a dedicated world percussionist and assorted exotic instruments and sometimes synth.

I also like Sinead Lohan, A Girl Called Eddy, and Ivoux. Each of those artists have a unique way of approaching what is essentially folky songs. Ivoux is especially cool in that they are almost totally synth based but their songs (on their one album) have an ancient quality to them that stands out.

Nice to see a namecheck for Steve Tibbets. Been a fan since Safe Journey. Great stuff.
An idiot on Set Theory:

That's the one that hooked me, too. Bought it on vinyl back in the day and when the distorted part kicked in on the first track, I was sold for life. 8)

Buckwheat Zydeco rocks my Lou'siana accordion. Not for Zydeco purists: Buckwheat incorporates ideas from other genres in his songs and does covers of non-Zydeco songs.

Niellerade Fallibilisthorstar - "The sound of rusted ghost armies" - SNSE. Primitive free-improv soundscraping recorded on location in various natural and unnatural locales... mysterious, haunted sounds.

Lucisferrato (also known as LC) - hard to describe project from St.Petersburg, crosses the lines of Russian folk music, avant-garde free-improv, post-industrial soundscaping, Eastern Orthodox church music, and sometimes even death metal, all wrapped up in bizarre multitracked vocal chant. Releases on Der Angriff, Tesco/Functional and Hau Ruck!/WKN.

Hum of the Druid - excellent, gritty, organic atmospheres, rides the line between dark ambience and noise with considerable finesse, quite unique non-synthetic sound.

I could list hundreds, alas, no time...

I met Steve Tibbets a couple times in the mid '80s- he used to work in a local record store. Very interesting guy :)

I hereby champion our local boys, One Ring Zero.

Had Hohner not chosen Ashland, Virginia for their American warehouse and servicing headquarters, the most interesting portion of the repertoire for claviola would never have been writ. Yet writ it was, and large too.

Do not be fooled by the title of their CD "Tranz Party." It's not even distantly similar to tarnce. "Part Fellini film, part Klezmer, part circus, and part cartoon." Hear claviolas, theremins, the (that's THE) Jones-o-phone, bread-making machine, and kitty litter box, all cooperating to create a blend of sonic textures that Art Linkletter has never called "smooth, relaxing, and 'groovy.'"

I will champion Cerebus Shoal 'til i die

Steak From Delta
French freaky no-waveish[1] semi-improvised stuff. High pitched voices, toy organs, wild disjointed guitar stuff.

La Société des Timides à la parade des Oiseaux
More French oddness. Beautiful surrealist music.

FM3
Canadian (I think) guy residing in Peking. Makes beautifully still ambient. His latest release was the Buddha box, a small digital sound-box that plays loops (which makes sense as his music is mostly loop based).

Af Ursin
Hard to describe improvisational stuff from Belgium. He uses just about anything that makes sound- timpani (one, actually- would that be a timpanus?), tapes, toys, cymbals, &c. Surrealism with a slight psychedelic edge.

Jan Klug
German sax player residing in The Netherlands (on the small island of Epibreren, to be precise). Uses various saxophones, including a home-made telescopic one, to build slowly evolving soundscapes.

Groet, Erik

[1] that would be proper New York stylee no-wave, not what passes for it these days.
Pop music delenda est.

Ha! I was going to mention them. They are released here on the same label I am signed to. Freakin' incredible stuff. I believe I am quoted in the press-release for the US releases...

Oh, and their cover art is every bit as strange and wonderful as their music!

You'd probably like Dernier du Culte and D.D.A.A. as well, if you're into LSDTALPDO.
