My only real concern about Vista is the DRM features embeded in the operating system - if you think Sony's recent foray into the world of coporate sponsered Trojans was sinister; you ain't seen nothing yet.

The next generation of Macs will use Intel chips - that means we'll all be able to run OS X on our PCs. That'll be one in the eye for Microsoft.

If the memory rumour is true, it might be 2GB set aside for not only for system purposes but also for multimedia tasks such as music. In order to make software run alot faster with the OS they set aside a minimum amount of 2GB this would mean that a solid stream of data always can stream through the different busses and have their place in RAM-memory. This might also indicate a CPU with more cache and HDD based data streaming, the benefits from using cache and HDD streaming would be increased power and speed since RAM is slow.

Dunbar: It all depends on how is the security tightened. Apple doesn't intend their OS to run on just any PC, only in theirs. I'm not that worried, as that's what I use (and I can vouch for the quality of the machine), but it'll be harder to use a hacked version in just any machine. Sites like www.osx86project.org track the news on this specific regard.

I've heard people state on forums that Apple are going to release a version of their OS for PC. I don't know if that's true.

Yeah, I had my eye on that one too. Windoze isn't made for DAWs and it shows. A dedicated OS should give a lot more performance.

That would be cool, at least there would be an alternative that way (Linux isn't quite there yet apparantly)

OTOH, M$ or Apple, what's the difference? Both prefer marketing schemes to putting the user in control.

I'm still on 98, and I am stressing about going to WInxp from win 98, I know I will have to go to cubase sx from my vst setup, so it'll be a big upgrade, but I know I need a new computer so I may as well do it all at once.

I Don't think the Apple OS will be officially released on PC in the near future (not initially anyway).But I can see a situation where it won't be made particularly hard for hackers to get it running on standard PC hardware.

Publically Apple will denounce the pirates as "scum of the Earth"; but privately they will sit back and watch to see how their OS fairs against the omnipotent Microsoft Windows. If the Apple OS appears to be poplular Apple will publically conceed "defeat" and in the interests of it's "users" will release an official version for the generic PC.

In the not too distant future Microsoft and Apple will be slogging it out for dominance in the PC OS market.

linux at the moment is still kind of in a stage where things are being changed and they are not quite perfected yet. you will never get standardization in linux because that simply is not its purpose. the only components missing though are a better audio engine with drivers which work for a wide range of cards (alsa is doing great here so far), and a few peices of quality software like a great host and some high quality modules. if i knew which direction it was best to head in, i'd already be working on this. like i said i hope to get going pretty soon. there are already existing alternatives though. try knoppix or something to get up and running quickly.

I have to somewhat sheepishly admit that I've come to like OSX. I'm a PC home user, but I've been using OSX over the last year or so at various places and it's grown on me a lot. Wasn't convinced for a long while, but the aesthetic aspects do smooth out the experience of using design applications. Doesn't make any difference to me on the sequencer front though as I use Tracktion and eXT.

Well, have you ever tried scrolling to a sample using Kontakt under OSX?
No matter where you put them, they're buried in paths of endless characters... seriously, you won't believe how much this pissed me off (I just had to do things like that a lot on an OSX machine).
The same is almost true fot the finder...
