I dont know -- i really dont see myself switching to vista, XP really does all i need it to do. Maybe for a net comptuer i may have to, but for my audio pc, XP is fine. I could definetly see an improvement from 98, ME to XP, but that was cause of all the problems i had with 98 that were just nonexistant with XP. As it sttands I have no problems with XP (SP1).

Dover666: At the risk of sounding facetious, I don't believe you can actually mean what you've just said.

Linux has advanced dramatically in the last years but it's ages behind from what a real (read: average) user expects, needs and has use for.

Linux has it's markets and those it excels on. It also has made inroads in several others and recent projects have tried to look at what an OS should be for people that are NOT interested in what the OS can or can't do but what they can and can't do and the ease they can do it in.

Each year Linux is closer, I've been using linux since 1997 or so and I'm really proud of having found uses for it almost for everything I've needed, but I wouldn't be able to, straight-faced, recommend linux over OSX (or even Windows) to a lot of my friends and I myself use OSX at home, both for my own peace of mind as for that of my family (I don't really miss anything, as I have all the software I like from linux available in OSX and I couldn't care less if OSX isn't open sourced in the same way I don't care if the hardware I use is not open-sourced).

It's hard being unbiased when commenting on something you personally like, but it lends a lot of credibility to arguments (and also takes rebuttals off the interlocutors).

I've heard people state on forums that Apple are going to release a version of their OS for PC. I don't know if that's true.
That would be interesting - especially if core video gets in.

Core video is part of MacOS. It's only hardware-dependant in that it needs a somewhat modern 3D graphics card to work. It doesn't use any CPU.

So yes, core video should be in. Whether it works with any specific graphics card depends on if that card has what it takes (usually the OS polls the card for features and memory) and if MacOS has drivers for it (which should be the responsibility of the manufacturers, contrary to what's currently thought as 'normal').

Yep, Linux is not quite there yet but given how quickly the DeMuDi distro is being developed it soon will be.

The trouble also with Linux is that most distros suffer from the "monkey see, monkey do" syndrome and none yet  are really dedicated just for music.

It just needs a few well known dev's to start to support it to give it that push. People would be prepared to pay for quality software as that is mainly what it lacks, the OS is very stable and superior to any version of windows.

People also seem to get things the wrong way round about Linux soundcard and video card support, blaming Linux. The problem lies in the fact that a lot of the hardware manufacturers will not release any driver code, hence "unsupported."

I know many people who are still using win98 and will not upgrade to XP as they can't see the benefit.

Fake: I agree wholeheartedly. I mentioned something similar in the thread about the responsibility for drivers being that of the manufacturers and not the OS developers (which have taken this responsibility out of need).

Also, you're right on what the distros need. They need devs that can at the same time know what they're doing (this is hard, because it means someone knowledgeable in the development side and the usage side), stop trying to copy other packages and keep working on it (need not be the same devs, really, the ones that keep a product alive) beyond version 0.4.2b.

HI

Perhaps they might like to release a totally stripped down version for those of us who want to run a DAW ..... and nothing else.

Beats having to tweak the o/s.

:hihi:

I hope to rectify that soon and may even be able to get EEC funding for it. :D

All I'm saying is that I think for me windows is finally a complete joke. With that list of requirements I don't see how this vista could be useful to me at all. I've never understood how an "OS" could use so much resources. (not really how, but why!) Oh well. What I meant is that the time is right for an alternative to bloom. ANY ALTERNATIVE. Fight the power!

You can already run the Apple OS on PC. If you want to build a PC running OSX; here's how to do it.
