Alright, I'm using cubase SX3 with the 3.1 update, and I've gone through the manual and everything, and I can not for the life of me figure out how to link the dials and sliders on my Edirol PCR-80 to any parameter on a VST.

Is there any kind of midi learn in cubase, so I can just tweak a dial in the vst, and then go "link last tweaked knob to midi controller", such as in FL?

I wish that feature was in Cubase... the regular VST format doesn't allow for that, unless the plugin maker specifically includes it. FL Studio can do it, because the FL wrapper supports it... which is naturally what FL uses to load VSTI's.

You'll have to change the CC's your controller outputs to coincide with what the vsti uses, unless you can change what CC they receive on in the plugin. A total pain I know... I spent 2 hours doing that last night with SX. Once you got it setup, it's kinda nice, as you don't really have to do it again with that particular vst... But on the fly stuff, geez, what a pain in the ass. Plus, controllers only have so much memory... so you have to load up an editor and send new banks etc... One plug I have is taking up 10 of 16 available banks on one controller. Man... god help you if you have to set that shit up manually. Even with an editor, its f**king grunt work. If there's another way, I don't know it.

I do totally wish you could do this in SX. It's so amazingly simple. Who the heck wants to look up CC's and nnrpn's in a freaking manual and load up an editor just to link a couple of knobs? Man... thats so... hardware... so... 1998! ;)

My god.

Okay, is there any sort of workaround to this? I really enjoy Cubase as a composition enviroment, but not having any midi control over VST's has started to really get to me. I suppose I can shell out the $50 or so for Energy XT that I've been considering, if it'll let me do something like this...

I should add that the mixer in SX 3 has automation. I havn't figured out how to get it to work though... or rather, I havn't really given it much effort. It's in the "Remote controlling the mixer" section in the manual.

I know how you feel, I jumped from VST 5 to FL Studio awhile back, when I quit using a lot of hardware. However, I still did most of my mixing in Cubase. I upgraded to SX3 recently and I figured I should start using Cubase again for producing/composing as I know the midi editors and arranging inside out... but stuff like not having midi learn is pretty damned annoying. Really screws up my work flow! I think Ableton Live has that feature even.

I've been messing with the FXpansion Guru demo as a replacment for FL's step editor... I guess I'll wait until FL 6 to decide for sure. Or maybe an update to Guru. Or maybe we'll be able to find a solution to this Midi learn deal in this thread... :|

I wish to see MIDI Learn ala Ableton Live Midimap.
Til then I stick mostly to VSTi that have the midilearn function in them.

in my quest of finding a new host, i have been trying out the major ones. i still cant decide on wether Cubase or Live is the way to go for me, tho.. i do know the answer to this topic's Q. :)

Cubase aint got midi learn, but u can assign stuff nevertheless. it just takes a little more effort i guess.

just go into Generic Remote and set it all up. i guess u have to load the right generic remote map for each song, but anyway.. its possible to midi control stuff this way.

Live is a little bit smoother in this department. :D

edit: eXT sure is a option for midi learn if u can spare the cpu. (its not cpu demaning, but a few instances take some load however..) i use eXT myself all over the place. 8)

edirol ships with a controller map for the Cubase mixer, if that's what you're looking for.. Read your Edirol manual for how to switch to that controller set.
