I'd call Sly Stone, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins P-Funk although they did all do Funk as well. And by Funk I guess I really mean James Brown who I used to think was the commercial side and therefore not as good but theres a reason he was so popular and thats because he was so funky and so f**king good.

I hate funk with a vengeance.
It used to drive me out of clubs...I'd go to some hardcore dance club years back, they'd play some excellent techno (or whatever) then towards the end of the night, when the DJ thought everyone was either bored or too out of it to notice, they'd throw on some crappy funk. Almost every club and every dickhead DJ did it. It used to drive me nuts. It'd ruin the vibe of the whole night - you know, when you're ready for one last mental epileptic fit on the dance floor, and some tedious funky chick music came on that brings you down completely.
Euuurggghhh!
It's just nasty.
Jay Kay and the like should be excommunicated, then hounded out of civilised society. And all DJs playing dance should be sent to re-doctrination sessions to learn the error of their insidious ways. Funk never did anyone any good. And it appears to be addictive. Anything chemical as evil as funk would have been classified as at least a class B by now, and you should get arrested for playing it. Any guitarist buying a wah-wah pedal in a shop should have it forcibly wrapped and packaged up his arse and be forced to ride home on a motorbike. It's a cancer on modern music. It's a putrifying serous herpes sore on the lip of any brass player. Stamp it out! Burn the CDs! In fact this thread should be locked and the author banned.

As much as I like Jamiroquai, I'd hardly go as far to say he's representative of Funk as a genre. As for what the DJ's were playing, I'd hazard a guess that they'd play psuedo, poppy funk. Real funk is a bit more hardcore. I could sit here and list roll off a list of artists like Sly, Bootsy, Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns, Funkadelic, Parliament, early Kool & The Gang, early Commodores, George Clinton, etc, etc (oh, I just didkritikon wrote:I hate funk with a vengeance.

) but funk isn't so much as a pigeon-holeable genre as it is a method, a "feel", an emotion. It's something that gets your ass planted on the one, and wiggles thru the 2, 3 & 4 I guess the best exponent of funk today is still Prince. Listen to more of his album stuff and you will get to hear his education in the funk. The fact that he used Larry Graham as his bassist, and then used Rhonda Smith, Larry's protege, shows his knowledge of using the right people to carry on the tradition. His Musicology album has some real funk highlights, and older tracks like Days Of Wild & Now are pure, dirty, hardcore funk in the true tradition.
I challenge anyone NOT to feel moved by a Bootsy or Larry bassline or a Maceo Parker sax riff...(who now incidentally also plays with Prince !;))

Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes, the bestest, hands down
I also like some of the Motown stuff like Temptations and Stevie obviously and the playthatfunkymusicwhiteboy funk-rock crossover style of the Rare Earth (and I generally dislike stuff like Deep Purple).
I beleive Incognito are the champions of the new-old funky soul thang. I'd love to know if there are bands in that vein that aren't from the 70s.
On the other hand, regardles of what you old farts might think, some of the funky/disco/neo-miami breaks stuff I hear occasionaly (as presented by the likes of Krafty Kuts)

The term "funky" is over used today to describe a danceable beat/tune, whereas "the funk" is so much more than just a song to dance to.
