Sonar and P5-ll here. As well as Vegas 6 for video and audio. I'm a midi nut so I do like the softsynth feature. If all you want to do is record audio then it would be overkill. But computers have simply become midi sequencers, audio recorders, and host for software synths. Kind of a all in the box thing. If you can afford the computer, start small on the software and grow as you learn it will amaze ya what can happen. Win XP is a must for what is needed to run these things. Lots of ram and a fast harddrive could help. You could go freebies/demos and still be doing it fast with the right machine. If thats what you want to do. PowerTracks pro audio is so cheep it's scary from PGMusic. But you will need a machine thats at least a little newer.

im waiting for kristal AE 2nd edition with famous vsti and midi support for free...but the project looks dead to me...

Ehem. No, that's quite accurate actually. I was going to say it wasn't, but you're right; Tracktion is not in the same league as Sonar, Cubase, etc: it's in a league of it's own. Just like that terrible movie, called 'a league of their own' - except not terrible and not a movie either.
Give tracktion a go. I consider it better than 9/10's of the music software out there, but seriously lacking in some areas - but bear in mind that it's version 2, as opposed to something like cubase, which must be (internal) version 200-and-something by now...
It's also considerably bug-free compared to the alternatives I've tried (can't speak for sonar though)-

Definitely try EnergyXT: it's great, it's a modular(!) host, a sampler, a sequencer, and the perfect addition to any host as plug-in (...host...) (...plug in...) (etc.

)

EnergyXT is one of those rare apps that are cheap, highly innovative, and developing fast. You can't help but love it. It's name is well chosen: it's very powerful, and intuitive.

More devs should try innovation over emulation.

as far as Sonar5 doesn't it accept VSTi's without a wrapper now??

since no-one else except for butter is really suggesting cubase to you, i'll chime in and say you really should check it out (i'm pretty sure there's a demo)

i came from 4-tracks then to portostudios, and the odd rented Alesis ADAT for this band or that..

then to my computer (a demo of ReBirth opened my eyes that my personal computer was getting fast enough for music!), ACID and Reason and MIDI, then pretty quickly into Cubase because the Reason/ACID just weren't cutting it.

i know lots of people hate cubase and there's all this controversy and all that stuff, and if you want to discuss that as well, ok but anyway...

to me it's still 'amazing' after a few years of using it... really everything i want to do, i can do... there's lots of different ways to do things (some people don't like that but...), you can approach tasks from all sorts of angles. you can use it simply as a multitrack, but it's also got multiple different ways to edit midi, powerful audio editing, great features for live and semi-live 'tracking', like punch-in, multiple takes.. i can go on and on but anyway

the great thing is that i just grew into it. the things that i needed to do when i started using it were really simple and intuitive to learn. it's just one of those apps that 'works the way i think', which is a personal thing that will be different for all sorts of people. as i got more and more into it, the new things i'd think of wanting to do were all possible, and easy and logical to set up.

anyway, you get the drift at this point. you could honestly learn the basics in an hour or two, and then be comfortable enough to get to work and explore the rest of the app without much problems. don't be scared of cubase

anyway, that's that, if you need cubase help or advice i'd be happy to help you get oriented, but seriously, give it a serious think

i'm super happy with it, one of the best decisions i ever made

btw energyXT rocks serious ass to use inside of Cubase. the combo just can't be beat.

The wrapper's still there. It's just not a separate process except at installation time.

When I installed Sonar5P I went through the wrapper dialog for the VSTI that were already in my plugins directory (including sfz, which Sonar5P installed) - just like for Sonar4P and P5V2.

I haven't tried the process in Sonar5P since then, as I was rebuilding my music laptop and had 30-some VSTI to install. I waited till they were all installed then I ran the wrapper to set up for P5V2.

Hey! I said I recommend Cubase!

I just wanted to point out that I'm biased.

Actually now would be a great time to pick up Cubase; Computer Music just put out an all-you-need-to-know, cover-to-cover Cubase magazine. It's perfect for someone who wants to pick it up and start producing!

I think Acid is just finally starting to get good. I am switcging back to. I started with Acid Pro 2 a long time ago then went on to Fruity and then Cubase, now back to Acid.

Man, I just could not wrap my head around VST instruments in ACID. And all the Sony bloatware are really starting to turn me off of it. I find I use ACID 3 if I need it; that was a solid, stable app.

I'd go one of:
1. energyXT. My favorite right now. Great sequencing, some quirks yes, but really great. Super cheap too. And the developer is the most responsive out there!

2. Ableton Live. This is really out of my price range but I like it alot.. I think one would write and arrange very differently using this host. So it would be good for a 2nd sequencer.

3. Tracktion2. I used to really like this but I don't use it anymore. Too many annoyances and really poor/unresponsive development. But I still recommend it to people relatively new to sequencers, or those requiring simplicity.
