tuning a half step low

I may have posted this clip before (or another clip from earlier in this project. I like to tweak tunings once in a while. The song I did for Katrina relief was played in Dm tuning DADFAD...I was messing about with my acoustic and thought, gee that first 'A' might sound better dropped to a 'G'. So I tried it, I can't find it listed anywhere but I'm sure I'm not the first to use this, but DGDFAD I think sounds kinda sweet (the clip is about 15 seconds or so long)

FSF plays tuned to "Drop C"... works well for my voice, and sounds deep without being sloppy or sounding like 7-string detuned bridge cables slapping around. heheh

I'm a bit of a drop-D geek. I started off just wanting to learn Tool riffs (Swamp song
) and moved on from there. I'm not really a melodic player, I'm more of a balls out riff-gimp. But I don't always use drop-d.

I think that's in drop-D. Ignore the strings, they're shit...
I mainly made this to explore 5/4 timing. It's 4/4 at the end.

did you know warmoth makes necks to turn a strat into a baritone?

What would fitting one of those entail Hink? The idea of it seems pretty sweet, and I have an old guitar I could pull apart

Actually, unless you ordered a body from them at the same time and had them drill the bridge (or trem) mounting holes, it'd be a real pain. The scale length's changed, so the bridge location has to as well...otherwise, you'd get close to being in tune but never quite there.

I'm not sure they would agree, it use to say direct replacement...but I couldn't find it now. However they list baritone necks for many guitars...including the vari-ax...so it seems too me it's a straight swap...ew wrote:Actually, unless you ordered a body from them at the same time and had them drill the bridge (or trem) mounting holes, it'd be a real pain. I use to like messing around with a Dan Electro baritone when I worked for a small music store chain....

Oops- you'd be right there. My apologies
Since the slop is already figured into the neck, bridge placement shouldn't be an issue. You might not have the same range of adjustment though, and I'd think the neck pickup would be a lot more trebly.

I would still get a body from them, I'd ask them to configure the cavities for a humbucker>P-bass>Humbucker and I wire it with the standard strat 5-way switching...I think you could get all kind of cool tones that way...I also noticed they have a 7 string baritone neck, which could be interesting. But I doubt you're gonna find many sets of 7 string baritone strings...ew wrote:Oops- you'd be right there. My apologies![]()

I had planned on using tax money to build a P-Bass, but I might rethink that....

I like that humbucker/ P-Bass/ humbucker idea, but trying to get the poles under the strings on the P-Bass would be a pain. And, before you go there, if I remember EMGs have poles; they just aren't exposed.
You'll have the problem of poles optimized for four strings being used with six unless you used a six string P-Bass variant, in which case you'd have to redo the bridge spacing, I'd think.
Interesting idea, though...

I'm not sure about the P-bass but most of the hunbuckers are rails if I remember right...I'll check it out...ew wrote:I like that humbucker/ P-Bass/ humbucker idea, but trying to get the poles under the strings on the P-Bass would be a pain. http://www.emginc.com/company.aspString Interface
The first choice in design is the string interface. The selection of a bar magnet or individual pole pieces is also an important one. All initial EMG designs use a bar magnet for two reasons - Pole pieces place too much magnetism under the strings and cause the lower ones (primarily low E, A, and D) to go "out of pitch" with a Doppler effect. This is especially true of the Fender Stratocaster* where 3 poles under each of the strings push and pull them through a variety of unnatural movements. Poles can also make intonation and tuning difficult. On the other hand, pole pieces have the benefit of a percussive attack giving the pickup much more of a "plucky" sound.
I am assuming that means bass pick-ups to, but if I decided to take it serious I'd inquire first...

in my old band we tuned down a half-step because it was easier on the vocalist - without many people thinking the song is in the wrong key.
