Everything is 8-10 in their reviews. I take all their reviews with a grain of salt.
Just about the worst magazine I've ever read...

...and, at f*cking last, support for multiple MIDI Input Devices. That alone makes it worth the upgrade price - oh, there is none!
It doesn't mention PDC though.

From the same issue:butter wrote:Everything is 8-10 in their reviews. I take all their reviews with a grain of salt.

Steinberg Studio Case II 7/10
Soundburst Northmood 7/10
Antares Avox 7/10
Have you ever read Heat?
Actually, CM was a considerable help in getting me to grips with music production. I find other mags more useful these days, but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near sh*t.

Yeah, but now it's more stable. ImageLine have probably changed all their knobs so they go all the way up to 11 too.Jason Brian Merrill wrote:i dont understand.. when has FL NOT been stable????deaneager wrote:Just had Computer Music through the door and FL6 XXL is reviewed, getting 9 out of 10. Im not saying that I dont think FL studio deserves the 9/10. I really dont know yet until its released. But there has never been any article that has just flat out PANNED a bad product. I have only read one outlet that has done anything like that.

well, I think all of those products deserve maybe around a 3, so... 7 is very generous...deaneager wrote:From the same issue:butter wrote:Everything is 8-10 in their reviews. I take all their reviews with a grain of salt.

I know only 3 mags that give sometimes (rarely) really critical reviews. The german Keyboard, the US Keyboard and Sound on Sound (remeber the waldorf Q review?
).
Computer Music and Future Music seem to be targeted at teens mostly and can hence be quite annoying to read (more pictures than substance). My personal favourite is still Sound on Sound but even that mag needs you to read between the lines, a lot.
Cheers!

I agree with half of the above statement.butter wrote:Everything is 8-10 in their reviews. I take all their reviews with a grain of salt.
Arturia's Minimoog V got a 7, and Hartman Neuron VSTI got a 3. It was a SCATHING review.
However, the other half stands - take the review with a grain of salt. The text of the review means more to me many times than the numeric score. I remember one VSTI that I couldn't understand their rationale for giving it a 9 rather than a 10 after reading the review.

Surely different mags have different scoring criteria. Some may work on a linear scale based on the reviewers personal preference, some may have a list of criteria that has to be met, of which most commercial products will sail past the low scores, therefore there may be a huge difference between an 8 and a 10. As dougsyo said, the text of the review is where the meat is. The final score can only be a rough, like-for-like indicator between products reviewed by the same magazine using the same scoring criteria.
As for magazines appealing to teenagers because they use more pictures. Well, it has little to do with age, some people are more visually oriented and are stimulated more by visuals. It has nothing to do with intelligence either, in fact, visually oriented people tend to think a lot quicker than those that are aurally or kinaesthetically oriented. Personally, I find FL's video tutorials a lot quicker and more effective than any manual I've read - a picture paints a thousand words, after all.

I agree. When I could afford to spend $14 a month on a magazine, I loved CM.deaneager wrote:Actually, CM was a considerable help in getting me to grips with music production. I find other mags more useful these days, but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near sh*t.

Hmm 9/10?
I remember CM giving the first release of SX 9/10, and everybody knows what a bugfest that was, but somehow they missed them all
CM reviews are shallow at best, more like shite in all truth. A few screen grabs, half a dozen paragrahps explaing what a peice of software 'should' do, and that's it. FLS users already know FL6 will be good, if not a 10/10, tho'
