New: I removed the 15 minute timeout from the preview - the only restriction now is that you cannot recall complex setups (you can only load two controllers)

This makes the tablet2midi demo fully functional, with a limited feature set :-)

Tablet 2 Midi is a standalone windows application that allow you to use your graphics tablet / digitizer as a set of MIDI controllers. You can add an unlimited number of controllers, by defining an area of the tablet surface as a button, a slider or an XY-pad.

The idea is that you get out a piece of paper and simply draw the controllers with a pencil (or you can use your favourite drawing software or word processor). When you have a good control layout, put the paper under the plastic cover of your tablet, and trace the controls as described in the next section.

What type of graphics tablet would work well with tablet2midi? There seem to be a lot of tablets available. What kind of specs should we be looking for in a graphics tablet? Is bigger better? Does resolution affect the results?

Finally, how much will tablet2midi cost? When do you think it will be ready? It's a great idea and definitely something I'd consider buying.

It's essential that it has a plastic cover so you can easily stick a piece of paper on the tablet surface for reference.
Pressure sensitivity is pretty essential too, and features like tilt and rotation is nice to have if you want to send out 7 parameters by moving one pen (can get pretty expressive this way)
And yes, size matters, you can fit more controls on a bigger surface. Resolution is not that important, as it is pretty high on all tablets. If you just want to send out standard MIDI it's unimportant. The resolution of MIDI is very low, so that'll be the bottleneck. Note that later versions of tablet2midi will support 32bit OSC messages, supported by MAX / PD and probably more apps.

Tablet2Midi will be cheaper than liveslice and it'll be ready before christmas :)

I don't have great knowledge about tablets, sorry. I'll let you know if I learn anything. Please post any relevant findings here, and I'll compile a list of recommended tablets along the way.

Would it be possible to create a virtual tablet and use the mouse to control sliders/buttons etc?

Trust 1200-V2 -
does that work?

It does!
But I don't know how to get the zero at the bottom of the sliders...

... is this possible with some graphic tablets?

... I mean, if you'd like to use several controllers simultaneously...

...seriously, what is multiple pen support?

(Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I haven't been following the discussion until now)

Are there any plans to implement a VST version? It would be nice to have this as a module directly inside eXT, rather than needing to route through a virtual midi cable from a standalone program.

Could you add a print function for generating tablet overlays? In other words, design your control areas inside the program, and it prints out a hard copy, scaled to the dimensions of your tablet. You would probably still need to recalibrate, but it just seems like a convenient way of making templates.

I fully intend to buy this when it is released. Looking great!
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

Does anyone know if you have to use a Pen on a Tablet PC? I'm just dreaming up this ideal MIDI controller with a Tablet PC. I could have my own configuration, run my fingers on it to pull multiple sliders at once or push a few buttons .... Am I dreaming?

To my limited knowledge tablets are pen driven.
But with a touch screen - maybe...

Look for something called a "penabled" driver from Wacom. I'm not sure about multitouch support - I think that's pretty expensive hardware, not found in the current tablet PC's - please correct me if I'm wrong.

Already on the todo list - I try to keep it up to date on the website :-)
