Live 5 is THE one to go for - finances permiting, as for Tracktion, well it's cheap, but it is cheap in more ways than one... Stick with Cubase until T3 comes out

Cubase to Logic to Cubase to Sonar to Cubase to FL Studio to Cubase SX to Live to Cubase SX to Tracktion to Cubase SX to Cubase SX3...next stop, Pro Tools 7 M-Powered, then probably back to Cubase SX3. Cubase just does it for me.

Long&Mcquades had Cubase SE on sale for $139, excellent features for that price and upgradeable from there down the line if you need it, I'll be happy with it for a long time yet...musiclinks wrote:Yikes, yes locking markers to timecode is important, I do have tempo changes in most of the work I do.
I'll have to download the t2 demo to see if it works for me. If I like it I may get cubase sx3 and t2, t2 is only $171 CDN, pretty cheap for all the features it has IMO.
I wish Cubase SX had an upgrade price for present users, as it stands I have to pay full price for Sx3, which since I've been using cubase since 3.5. I feel is a little unfair since there is a competitive upgrade from other hosts.

do you mean there's no upgrade path for Cubase5 owners?musiclinks wrote:I wish Cubase SX had an upgrade price for present users, as it stands I have to pay full price for Sx3, which since I've been using cubase since 3.5. I can't remember all of the details, but I'm pretty sure there is still an upgrade path...it's not as cheap as it used to be from VST->SX, but check out the Steinberg site - it's in there somewhere. I bought SX2 when Steinberg said they were about to drop the upgrade path from any VST version just before the release of SX3...turned out that they didn't completely drop an upgrade pathway, but I think it did get a bit more costly. I could be hopelessly wrong, but I'm fairly sure you don't have to pay full price. It may be that you have to upgrade to SX2 or something odd like that, but that wouldn't be too bad a thing. SX2.2 is pretty stable, and there has been nothing released for SX3 that has made me want to run out and upgrade yet.do you mean there's no upgrade path for Cubase5 owners?

When I went from VST5->SX2, it only cost me $350(NZ) which in local terms is pretty cheap for s/w - I think the full price here is something like $1100 or more.
Anyway...check out the Steinberg site - it's pretty tortuous, but it's in there somewhere.

Well, I upgraded from cubase VST4 to Tracktion, and Im certaintly happy. Of course the earlier software was much more expensive, but the high prices for Cubase SX and others today, is a bit too much of a tease and must offend some poeple.

i guess i know what you mean, the thing i dislike with all those big apps is that you have to pay again and again every year or so for update, and for hobbyist that' not cheap!Rangtangtang wrote:Well, I upgraded from cubase VST4 to Tracktion, and Im certaintly happy. I could take your well thought out opinion more seriously if I knew you used midi extensively, which you have made clear in Tracktion forum posts that you don't.Lunch Money wrote:Pffff....Leslie wrote:Live 5 is THE one to go for - finances permiting, as for Tracktion, well it's cheap, but it is cheap in more ways than one... Tracktion is fine for audio, but for anyone who will be doing extensive midi, it is not so good.

Has anyone made the move from Cubase VSt to Tracktion?
I'm contemplating moving to Cubase SX but I've been reading that Tracktion is quite good and may have the features I require for television and movie composing as well as song writing.
I moved from SX to Tracktion over two years ago. Never even considered going back to SX. The workflow in Tracktion is just too good.

Actually, I've found the reverse to be true... particularly since v2.P.T. wrote: I could take your well thought out opinion more seriously if I knew you used midi extensively, which you have made clear in Tracktion forum posts that you don't.

Go with tracktion: my vote.

I don't see how dongle's impede hackers/crackers - they're the one's who can get arounbd that stuff the easiest - it's the users that suffer at the end of the day-kritikon wrote:The dongle won't be a problem. Personally, I don't know why PC users ever get bothered about them, it's a small price to pay if it impedes the crackers IMO. And I read a post somewhere in KvR about someone who bought the Korg Legacy set and loaded their license onto the Steinberg one without any problems. So it's good to know that if dongles ever become a standard, that only one will be necessary.

I moved from SX to Live5 a few months ago.
Never even considered Tracktion seriously.
I have tried working with the free version 1 they gave out last year.
Just didn't fit me.

And I'd take other people's well-thought-out opinions more seriously if they were more well-thought-out.P.T. wrote:I could take your well thought out opinion more seriously if I knew you used midi extensively, which you have made clear in Tracktion forum posts that you don't.Lunch Money wrote:Pffff....Leslie wrote:Live 5 is THE one to go for - finances permiting, as for Tracktion, well it's cheap, but it is cheap in more ways than one... I guess it depends on what you mean by "extensive MIDI". I just don't like to oversell myself, but all of my tracks have (by necessity) at least a bit of MIDI in them, so it's not like I never touch the stuff.
Didn't realize that honesty about my own experiences invalidates my opinion. Tell you what, I'll start pretending something I'm not, which is what other people on internet forums tend to do. Then you'll never know that I'm just a guy who likes to make music and doesn't use external MIDI devices except as controllers.
