Ok. It works, I can see this sort of knob thing spinning around, but it doesn't have a belt.

This is obviously a decision for you to make, but as a temporary measure, you could use an elastic band (or similar) for a belt. It's a bit chop shop, but needs must (and if you get a dencent band, not one of those cheapo coloured ones, it could work out pretty much ok if it ends up you can't get a belt.)

Yeah, well I'm not intending to do anything other than sample some old records (Puff The Magic Dragon anyone?) so if an elastic band will suffice

Looks like you've got it going. If your desk has RIAA inputs then it should be good.

I didn't see it mentioned but I only scanned, back in the day it was ceramic and magnetic cartridges for choice...a pioneer would be the latter (cheapy bsr are ceramic)...which will mean you'll need a matching pre-amp (radio shack use to make them) you can use regular pres but I have not found it to work all that well that way...

Excuse my ignorance, but why do I need a preamp when I've got my mixer RIAA inputs? Can't I just go straight into the mixer?

yeah yah can and I have done that with my turntable...but you get too much high end and you have to tweak it right...the matching boxes were a fixed gain and designed for turntables. It might be hard findin one now though, perhaps ebay (they cost 20 bux 20 years ago) If you looked at some older recievers and stereo pre-amps you would see some had a ceramic input and a magnetic input...I have gotten much better results by going through my stereo and sending that signal direct to my recording software and keeping the pre's gains at 0...if you have a reciever made in the last 25 years with phono likely it has a magnetic input.

I'll try it when I get the elastic bands, also, there is some gunky stuff on the platter from the old band - seems it snapped and the old owner just left it to melt!! Yikes.

Are you sure that the mixers RIAA isn't set up for a magnetic cartridge? I would think it would be. Ceramic pickups were low quality weren't they? Almost all decent equipment was magnetic.

I'm just gonna use a strong elastic band for the belt.

My mixers manual on RIAA:

"When Vinyl is recorded an EQ curve is applied to maximise the dynamic range at the cutting stage. Engaging this switch reverses the EQ curve, returning the signal to its former glory. Use this for turntable inputs which do not have built in RIAA EQ.

When using turntables, ensure you connect the turntable earth to the earth stud on the left hand side of the console."

How would you power a turntable without an hi-fi?
