I add this then:

Apart from all that we've done so far, we'll need to agressively market our CDs now to the general public.

If you've been unable to help us so far in the way of an order or song contribution, now is the time to help out with just a small effort, such as a phone call or email.

Everyone can help -- even just emailing your local newspaper editors and sending them the website link (as in my sig below).

This might take you a few minutes at the most and the rewards may be substantial as far as additional sales are concerned! :)

Here are some stats to consider:

Katrina destroyed perhaps 250,000 homes, prompted more than 500,000 unemployment claims and caused as much as $60 billion in insured damage (no one knows how much was uninsured) and $200 billion in government losses. Everything from restarting the New Orleans economy to rebuilding infrastructure, homes for the tens of thousands of homeless, hospital and health/community services needs to be done and done now.

While we're rebuilding Faluja and Kabul and the oilfields of Iraq, let's not forget New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, and their people.

Alex,

Regarding marketing - which would be easier - to have more pre-orders, or to tell folks to go to CDbaby when the disc is there? It seems we are at a transition point. I personally, am waiting to send folks over to cdbaby.com when the disc is offered there. Many of my friends and family don't have paypal accounts and I'd like to save them the hassle of going through that process of getting a paypal account (because I would have to explain how to do it in detail!!!).

I know this doesn't help out for the pre-order prize draws - but it's my opinion that in order to be most efficient with this for everyone involved, we now have to put the focus on the real-deal sales through CDbaby.

Agreed or not?

A follow-on question is: What happens if we sell-out the lot of 500? Is there any plan to hold back enough proceeds to press another 500?

I think I can realistically generate about 10 sales; hoping for more, but realistically I think I can convince 10 people to buy. If we all do that, the 500 will be gone quickly.

Scott, I don't think it's viable to hold back funds for another batch - about 2/5ths of our income is spent on the manufacturing.

Preorders also costs us quite a bit in CDBaby handling and shipping. I have already suggested that we stop the preorders. However, the organizing team felt it was appropriate to keep the preorder option open until CDBaby takes over. The monetary difference probably won't be so big.

If we luck out and sell more than 500, we have a luxury problem and will have to find a way to raise more funds. But let's not forget that the entire point of the CD is to raise funds, and we are about to pay the first money into the funds now. The reason it's taking so long is that we want to make sure we have the cash required for the manufacturing and the preorder shipments before we give away the money.

you could put the money in case we need more into an escrow account...put a time limit on how long the cds will be available, and then if we don't use that money make a second donation. Which of course could be making a little interest as well :)

It's all worthy debate -- the fact that we have the luxury of such a debate is great! :)

I think we've all determined and agreed that the preorder effort will cease the day the product is available on CDBaby. On that day (around the second week in December as an estimate) we will halt the preorder sales and inform the devs whose prizes were not awarded.

Until then, we power on! Why not? :)

500 is a LOT of sales, given the effort. It's certainly not going to be as much money for the charities as many of the more major musical efforts have generated, but we've done our bit and can be rather proud I think that we've done something well for a good cause.

Another thing we've done is once again prove that we can, via our music and collaborative efforts as KVR mates, do something that makes a positive difference.

That said, if we get a call from CDBaby saying that they're still receiving orders after the stock has run out, there are perhaps some considerations we could then entertain, but the LAST thing we'd want to be involved in is constantly using profits to produce more CDs -- the Ouroboros Effect....

;)

Cheers,
Alex

As for marketing . . . most of what I intend to do has to wait until we have actual product. At that point, it becomes much easier to start pounding the pavement and generating buzz. I'll be contacting a couple people at National Public Radio and some others at a Washington DC area radio station.

For those who still do the whole family thing on Thanksgiving, don't forget to mention it to everyone..:)

Same for me, except I'll hit Detroit, MI area and my cousin, a marketing exec in Atlanta, will hit some PR in the Atlanta area (Freezstar, don't be surprised if Aaron Lake sends an e-mail or two to you).

xRAVENx,

Just listened to the bonus tracks. I like them all, but I want more of your tunes.

www.xravenx.net takes me just to a logo page. Is there anywhere else I can go to hear more of your stuff?

It's quite 'Chicane', which is a good thing to me.
