Sorry - Nope. Kontakt format is proprietary.

is there a stripped down version of Kontakt available? Or perhaps some other (cheaper) NI software that can play
kontakt kits? or a demo? or can these kits be converted to another format?

Ok, ok! But no sampler can read them directly

Does it handle encrypted instruments though?

Nope.. Would risk getting sued by companies owning the encrypted instruments I guess..

Is the new directwave sampler able to load soundfonts?

It currently imports Wav, Akai & soundfonts.

We are working on support for :

Kontakt, Battery, Giga, NN-XT, Recycle EXS-24.

... & hope to get it ready in time for FL6.

Generic Kontakt instruments (typically a .nki file plus wav files) can be read by VSampler. If I remember right, some sample vendors provide a set of wav files plus the .fxb for Halion and the .nki for Kontakt the same time. If the files are named "sensibly" then it may be possible for a sampler to build from just the wav files (I did this with vsampler and some of the HollowSun samples to make soundfonts).

There are other formats that NI uses, for example "one big file" that holds all the sample data. Some of these are encrypted as well. I suspect that programs other than Kontakt won't touch these.

Kompakt ($200 or so, if I remember right) can also read NI format, although I don't know if it can read encrypted instruments, but it can read the big bundled files.

Recently I've seen some instruments come out in Kontakt2 format. For those, right now, you pretty-much have to settle for buying Kontakt2. Academic price is down to $200 right now (when I got it six weeks ago, it was $269 - ouch).

Yes. Kompakt ($199).

I use it with Kontakt, EXS, soundfont and Gigastudio files.
