Hello,

Thought this would be good information for KVRer's in respect to the trouble those have had with s/w protection such as Pace.

I know Sonar does not use this. Any others??

eXT uses a simple key-file! :-D

Live doesn't. It does use C/R for copy protection, but it's relatively benign...

Yes, as stated, Sonar and Ableton Live are the two biggies - both now use a simple challenge/response copy protection. The downside is you can't install them on multiple systems and move the dongle around or course. Swings and rounderbouts... but I too prefer to avoid dongles personally.

Adobe Audition 1.5 doesn't even use C/R - just a serial number printed on the CD box... great stuff!!!

Fortunately, most native Windows host apps don't use USB dongles or PACE type CP crap. It is probably easier to list the current one's that do:

Steinberg host apps (Cubase SX 3/Nuendo 3)
Magix Samplitude 8

That is about it, me thinks......

I am not sure about SAW Studio...... :?:

Dunno about sonar, but the abes allow 2 unlocks before you have to specifically request them (guess that's for the dudes who are producing at home & taking a lappie out on the road etc.).

Yes that's another great thing about Ableton Live

The Sonar license only works for one machine.

FL Studio and Tracktion are another two programs that don't use a dongle, of course :)

Who say's you can't install on multiple systems. I have been installing every version of SONAR on both my laptop and desktop, for years, since version 2.0. The same now goes for P5 2.0 too. It should not be a problem, as long as it is for personal use and you are not using both copies, of an app, at the same time. I even have a confirmation email from Cakewalk sales & marketing to prove it. :P

Cheers,

You do...

Well at least with Sonar 5 you tick a box during the installation process agreeing to only use it on one computer. Perhaps that means one at a time?

So are Cakewlak OK with you getting a second registration code etc as part of the challenge/response system introduced in version 5?

Isn´t dongles and PACE-systems the wrong way to go when fighting warez and piracy? It´s quite obvious that it doesn´t work. It´s just a matter of time before H2O or whoever breaks the system and distribute their "solution" freely on the net.

I applaud Ableton and Cakewalk for using a protection-system that actually makes it easier for the artists.

With Sonar 5, you don't need additional registration codes to activate on a second machine. The response code you get from Cakewalk is not keyed to the machine, so you can use the same code for your desktop and your laptop.

No need to get a second registration code. The same code works, on both computers. In my case, both my desktop and laptop. FWIW, the serial number & registration code is not tied to any particular computer or device. I had to re-format my laptop "C" drive last week (corrupt or missing system file) and then re-install all my apps. I had ghosted my drive, but that failed to install correctly. :( SONAR 5 re-installed (with the same serial & reg code) without a hitch. :)

Cheers for the Sonar info folks :D

I ust admit sonar just keeps looking better & better & at around £370 for the producer edition it seems like damn good value when you consider everything included.
It would be near perfect if not for the limited rewire implementation (wish they'd improve that).
