Whats the diff between an 'IPOD' and an MP3 player?

Is there any?

I see MP3 players in asda for 50 quid, but Ipods cost 3/4 times that? Is it purely storage size?

ipods generally have a hard drive and so have more storage.. the one i have is 20 gigabytes.. about the same as on my computer only a few years ago. thats quite a bit of music. i've had it about a year and a half and really just nearing full now.- alot of the small mp3 players just have 128 256 or 512 meg storage.theres other options to the ipod but it seems to have the bigger share of the market.

I see. I would be looking to replace my home hi fi as opposed to having something to walk the streets/entice the muggers with.

I fancy having a personal jukebox plugged into my hi fi amp. Are these sort of connections standard?

iPod is a brand name. 'MP3 Player' is a device.

An iPod is an MP3 Player. Not all MP3 players are iPods.

Yes. Same as there is a difference between 'Ford Mustand' and 'a car'

No. Firstly there's more than one kind of iPod, so they vary in price. Some have hard drives, some have solid-state memory. Solid-state memory is smaller, 'jogproof', and more expensive. Hard drives have more capacity, and are cheaper. And there are all sorts of other factors, like the software for transferring files, whether it can be used as an external hard drive, nattery life, physical size (smaller = more expensive), the 'style factor' (preferred brand name = more expensive)
In other words, lots of factors determine the price, pretty much like any other consumer electronics item.

PS - no reflection on MarcoUKs question - just on WRs disdainful tone :D

Anyone have one of those RIO Carbon Pearl things? Looks a lot like an iPOD (perhaps even prettier). I played a bit with a demo model at FutureShop, but the sales guy kept trying to persuade me to buy the iPOD instead... Probably because his commission would be higher...

I like the size, and I really like the screen display, but how about quality? Is RIO any good? Haven't heard anything about them...

Cheers.
