i've moved to a 3rd floor apartment and i'd like to know if there is anything i can do to minimize the amount of bass the people below me might end up hearing.
in addition to my studio monitors, i've got a bass amp and a small home theater setup with a sub. i dont play loud at all, but i would like to know if there is anything else i can do to further cut down on the amount of bass that might bleed through to the apartment below. would it help to try to isolate subs and speakers in an attempt to keep vibrations going into the floor? if so, how would i go about doing that?

my neighbs keep the music low, but the bass still bumps in. i'd like to know the answer so i can pass it on. maybe this can be applied to car stereos too so my windows won't rattle when the gangstas drive by

the only way I can avoid pissing off my neighbors is by using my Jstation and keeping my rokit 5s turned down low. My Apt is made of concrete and steel too. Cinderblock walls help quite a bit, but bass geetars and apts just dont mix.

Isolate them from the floors. That'll help some.
Other than that, there's really nothing to be done. Its very difficult to prevent acoustic transmission, especially of bass frequencies, besides mounds of thick, dense material, which would require the enteire floor of your appt to be rooted up...

when i lived in an apartment, my bass amp collected dust. there was no way to play without someone hearing it. i live in a house now and still don't use my amp for the same reason (the houses are close together.)
now i use amplitude and have made my own bass presets. its all done through headphones and my computer. i do miss feeling the bass through an amp, but sometimes there's just no choice.

since bass leakage most likely can't be helped, a little engineering goes a long way - social engineering that is.
Talk to your neighbours and tell 'em you need to crank it up a notch every once in a while. Most likely they will understand. Negociate "crank up times" with them if you need to.

If they really won't tolerate any kind of bass during the daytime (do they have a baby or something?), all I can think of is carpetting or get your bass amp up off the floor. But you're pretty much stuck, unless you can get your whole room to float!

thanks for the replies. i had a feeling there wasnt much to be done. thus far, no one has complained, but i havent done much yet either. the most bass that has regularly occured has been when watching tv or a movie. i've got the little home theater sub turned down to 1 (which is enough for this system), but i still worry about bothering them...especially since i keep somewhat odd hours. the place is already carpeted, but i'll try lifting that sub off of the ground.
the studio monitors are currently on my desk. eventually i'll get stands. i've been thinking about getting those isolation foam pads for them anyway.
as for the bass amp, yeah i figured that was a totally hopeless cause. it produces such a full sound that im sure it easilly goes right through these thin walls, even at very low levels. (and thats the 2x10. i havent had the 1x15 hooked up for years.) for recording purposes though, i dont mic it often. i typically mix a direct line out from the head (with the speaker off) along with the signal from my bass pod.
i guess im most concerned with when im either mixing, listening to music, or watching tv...and i dont want to always use headphones. (especially when mixing.)
i suppose i should go downstairs at some point and ask them about the sound. maybe do a test with them where i try various levels and sound sources, and they can tell me how much of it was annoying.

Definitely get the isolation pads (MoPads, I got 'em), they help clear up your sound. Check out the neighbours, I'm sure they're reasonable. Everyone has to crank movies to hear the dialogue, and the odd tracking of a bass amp shouldn't kill anybody. God, I can't remember the last time I ever got a complaint regarding tracking. Drinking, yes. Tracking, never.

From my experience, the best thing you can do is live upstairs from a drug dealer. He ain't gonna cause a fuss! I had NO worries back in Chicago from my neighbour for this reason, even when we'd be cranking out house at 6am on the loudspeakers.
