Hey,

I'm currently using SX but haven't exactly bought it and don't really have the cash to do so at the moment, I was just wondering if anyone has come across any decent FREE pieces of software capable of the same thing ...

Cheers, Mev!

"ducks for cover and runs from the barrage of ensuing posts" - :hihi:

There was a free host posted on here a week ago I think.
You may want to do a forum search first.
I can't remember the name of it but the thread did have link also.
Other than that well ummmm .... good luck with thread.

I'm new to this game, but if it's audio you're after you can't go wrong with Kristal Audio Engine (free download). Sorry, I don't know of a free MIDI, or both compatable.....but wait....someone will ...soon!

I think thats what I was thinking of.
He should really just cough up the cash on something like EnergyXT which is less than $60 and more than up too the task IMHO.

Not so much free - but workable in it's own right.

If you can get your hands on a copy of Computer Music magazine (runs about $14 US), on each cover DVD, there is a workable host called Cmuzys. Supports VST/VSTi, is audio and midi, and will get you going.

For $49, you can buy n-Track from www.fasoft.com

energyXT is about the same price.

If you just want to audition VST/VSTi, try minihost or savihost.

Not really free but for 39 euros XT is practically a night on the town. Not to mention really really great.

Why did you leave the part out where he says that he's now looking for a free host? He obviously wants to do the right thing. Why are you trying to make this guy look bad? You should be encouraging him instead.

My spies inform me that jeffreyjames wrote:I'm currently using SX but haven't exactly bought it and don't really have the cash to do so at the moment, I was just wondering if anyone has come across any decent FREE pieces of software capable of the same thing ...
Congratulations on choosing to do the right thing!

My advice would be to try out each of the free apps that safeaim linked you to; Buzz (if you're into trackers), Delta SP, and the Frieve thing (I forget its name) are all great ways to get started. If I hadn't been lucky enough to run into the Tracktion 1 freebie made available last year, I'd probably be using one of them.

That said, you can get a lot of mileage out of using Audacity to record and mix audio, Jazz++ to record midi, and the demo of Multitrack Studio (an excellent app, btw) or SynthFont to render midi to audio. But a good host is a much better idea; save up your pennies and get a decent, inexpensive host (say, Energy XT, Multitrack Studio, or N-Track Studio) in the near future.

I hope it all works out for you.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!
