the solution to piracy involves removing the need for piracy. this means providing basic solutions to private individuals free of charge for small scale projects.

unfortunately this requires reducing profits, and if you say that in a board room you get a wedgie before being thrown out the window from the 40th floor.

theft reflects the poor social ideals which these companies operate by. they make more money this way, and they want to make even more by eliminating theft magically like sweeping it under the rug. sorry guys, the world doesnt work like that, if someone is starving, they will steal. if someone wants an instrument of acceptable quality for their hobby, they will steal if a social (free, fair) solution isnt available. since companies end up making more money using the method they currently use while attempting to deny the reality of the world we live in, well.. they need to stuff themselves and do their business as usual.

personally, i write my own software, it will be or is better than yours, and i give it away for free, so eat me.

In that case then perhaps you should be asking them for their opinion on the matter before you speak on their behalf.

Other than assholes like Madonna and Metallica, many artists would just as soon have their music distributed freely via MP3s anyway. Since they generaly make less than 10 cents of off the sales of each CD, these artists feel that the extra exposure will drive more people to their live shows where they actually do make good money.

The truth is that theft is a reality of our everyday lives. Retail stores, service industry, banks and individuals all deal with robbery and theft. Hardly any one is untouched by theft at one time or another. Business’ and insurance companies factor this into the price of doing business. Yet how often, compared to the RIAA and MPAA, do you hear these institutions bellyaching about theft destroying their industries?

I think it’s pretty obvious that the popular artists and the executives that run the industry are quite wealthy. In fact, on the whole, they are within the wealthiest 1% of the entire planet’s population. The truth is that music labels make just as much money as they always have… on a per-artist basis. The real problem is that they are releasing fewer artists then they ever have. This is, IMO, due to bad management and the fear of producing and releasing artists that may fail. I see this same dynamic in my industry all the time. It’s almost a paralysis. Factor in executives that need to explain to their shareholders why the profits aren’t higher and you begin to see a picture of scapegoating that IMO is a big factor in the whole music/video piracy witch-hunt. The bottom line to all this is pure, unchecked, good-old-fashioned, capitalist greed. Plain and simple.

Does this make theft ok? No, of course it doesn’t. However what I’m trying to illustrate is that there are far more complex factors at work here. Personally I don’t feel sorry for these people. They are filthy rich. The only people that I feel that piracy really hurts are small businesses, such as the VST developers that frequent this forum, that struggle to survive. Obviously larger software companies can amortize loss to piracy by having a broader range of products and more distribution outlets for their sales. I’m sure that Charlie Steinberg is pretty well off by now. As far as I’m concerned, like retail and service companies, the RIAA and MPAA just need to be realistic and factor theft into their business plans and stop with all the charades. Meanwhile, I for one, refuse to buy into their bullshit.

What kind of f**king pussy whipped world am I living in? Jesus, now people are even screwing their friends over for these f**king companies and their bogus morals.

The whole anti-sharing thing going on right now... It has f**k all to do with piracy being right or wrong. It has no foundation in morality.

It has everything to do with greedy bastards wanting even more money.

[quote="Andrew Vernon"]It has no foundation in morality.

Copyright's "foundation in morality" comes from the other end of the spectrum anyway -- from when the only books that certain governments would allow to be printed were the king's sanctioned version of the bible.

The spirit of copyright is supposed to be 99 parts enriching society, and one part protecting publishers.

I expect all except Norah would be bewildered by it all. I think Norah was one of Doug Cornell's protegés though, and I would expect her to be as ruthless about protecting her interests as any record company.
