i have searched the forums and cannot seem to get a clear answer to the following question.... which bitcrusher vst (free or other) is most closely able to emulate the sound of a 12-bit MPC60 or SP1200.... ??? i know this is a topic that likely has been spoken about previously, but i could not find a thread when i searched the forum. thanks

never used either of those devices, but maybe try out the e-phonic lofi plugin or one called decimate (can't remember the developer). also, a lot of jackdark's darkware FX can seriously mangle your audio.

edit: here's a list of the "lofi" FX in the KVR database:

maybe something in there is what you're after.

You can get it here.

(Okay excuse the self fellatio, new release, it's warranted. :P )

reprznt As you're familiar with the subject from the various threads... you should know that the answer is none.

Doesn't mean that some of the available ones don't sound sweet though :)

i wish i was a programmer..... creating the ultimate and supreme bitcrusher would be worth $$$ to me. I have used several of these vst's and i just cannot get the sound that i am looking for. i was thinking there may be one that i have not tried. Perhaps the TBT samplereducer, but i cannot find a current location to download this. but anyway... i am going to try the battery acid effect. thanks very much and i really appreciate the efforts of the kvr developers. rep...

What would the "ultimate and supreme" bitcrusher need to incorporate, how would you design it? I am interested.

I am also interested to know what you think of the presets from the demo of Battery Acid if you do check it out. Thanks! :)

i have an article at home that was written by Rodger Linn... he is the guy who designed the MPC60. There was a few "tricks" that he speaks about in the article, that helped to create the MPC60 sound. there was something to do with the placement of a high-pass filter or something like that, in addition to the 12 bit sample truncation and degredation, etc... i will look at the article tonight and quote what Roger Linn says are the specific components (or signal path) utilized for the MPC60 sound. It was an old Keyboard Magazine from the 90's. The cover article was "Samplers Rule" and it featured the first review of the MPC2000.

I was always very fond of the MDA degrade plug

maybe you're not looking for a bitcrusher - it can do one thing - reduce the sound quality until it is completely destroyed- ie - 44100 <-> 11500 16 <-> 1 (no real audio)
anyway - I'm studying distortion technique right now, as I won't put out a lead/pad synth without a good dis box on it.... future info will follow..... Good luck to Mr. Dark and his latest release - it's nice to see you found Vera's controls....

If you want that box your talking about send me a pdf of the manual - any specs you have, and if you can , a couple wavs that've been treated with it (do you own the box? have used it?)

anticode is pretty good at making sounds gritty; you can add all kinds of aliasing noise by reducing the sample rate but then you can shape that noise using the original sound's spectrum. a bit hard to explain, but I think it gives a unique kind of grit.

I really think this is the one. It crushes, but also has different interpolation options for different types of crush, and a couple of filters to shape the sound. I am sure you could get the sound you are after with it.

working on the dis prefab for my next synth - ARRGH! it's too mean right now- so far just a rangeable staticy mess pours into the incoming- after going thru filt- makes "La Bohema" sound pretty fu**ing nasty!!

I like the mda degrade very much. Try it with the following settings:

Headroom : at most -15
Quant (bits) : 8-13
Rate (Samplerate): between 14700 and 6300 (on both sides. they sound different)
PostFilt (Post LoPassFilter): depends on the settings and on the audiomaterial. If the result sounds to much like "ringmodulation" try to set the Cutoff of the Filter a little bit under the samplerate value.
NonLin: I dont use this option often and when I use it I use small values.
Output: you can amplify the audio here. I dont use this.

Peace
Dont worry that this PlugIn change your audio from stereo to mono. The SP1200 is mono too. :)
